As a child, ancient egyptian history was my escape. I would sit under my covers for hours reading books I had recently checked out from my city library about pharaohs, pyramids, and my favorite subject of all, Cleopatra. When visiting The Rosicrucian Museum of San Jose, I felt like a child agin. While touring the many different exhibits, I became more excited and interested one after another. After carefully reviewing over 4 pairs of artifacts, I chose to compare and contrast a predynastic box coffin and a Middle Kingdom coffin. The predynastic box coffin dates back to 3200 B.C.E and is not adorned with any after life offerings or scriptures, while the coffin of Lady…

It is a part of the ancient city of Thebes (Dorman, Peter). The Valley of the Kings is a burial site of almost all the pharaohs from 1539-1075 BCE (Dorman, Peter). The pharaohs from that time period feared for the safety of their rich burials. They chose to conceal their tombs in a valley in the western hills behind Dayr al-Bahri (Dorman, Peter). The tombs have descending corridor with deep shafts and pillared chambers to confuse robbers (Dorman, Peter). The cases were covered with “sculptured and painted scenes” of the pharaohs with god and goddess. There were also magical texts to help the pharaohs on their journey in the afterlife (Dorman, Peter). All tombs were cleared out in the 21st dynasty to protect the mummies and to recycle the treasures back into the royal treasury. Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered in 1922 under pile of rock chippings. The treasures in his tomb indicated “how rich the burial of a great pharaoh” must have been during that time (Dorman,…

Tausert was one of the few queens who ruled Egypt as pharaoh. She was the second wife of Seti II. It was Seti II that ordered her tomb to be built. This was an honor given to very few queens. She was the last ruler of Dynasty 19. Her tomb was cut into the base of a sheer cliff at the head of the southwestern branch of the Valley of the Kings. As the tomb was being built, she became the co-regent of Siptah. Later she ascended to the thrown of Egypt as Pharaoh. These changed titles are all reflected on the changing design and decoration of her tomb, which has been designated KV 14. Tausert’s successor, Setnakht, died unexpectedly. Setnakht’s original tomb was unfinished at the time of his death, but records show that there was still plenty of time to finish it before his burial. Apparently his son, Ramesses III, went against his father’s wishes and decided to bury him in the tomb of Tausert. It was then that KV 14 was remodeled as Setnakht’s burial tomb. The scenes of Tausert on the walls were plastered over and replaced with figures and names of Setnakht. The plaster has fallen away in some parts of the tomb, exposing parts of the earlier scenes that were originally there. Throughout the tomb’s first three corridors, there are holes cut into the walls. These holes held beams attached to ropes to control the descent of the royal sarcophagus when it was lowered into the tomb.…
