Oral Sugery: A Short Story
Ding, the sound of a bat, I am falling down as the world goes into slow motion. Next thing I know there is blood all over my body and when I tried to talk, I felt teeth in the back of my throat. The day started out normal as I woke up and prepared for a baseball game. I was pitching that game and I was stoked to start. I got to field feeling good and mentally ready for the game. My arm felt great and I was ready to go. The first inning went smoothly as I got the first three batters out. However, the next inning would change my life forever. I started out walking the first batter and then the hits kept coming. Now that I look back on it I remember several line drives going straight over my head. Then next thing later I take a line drive straight into the mouth. …show more content…
I was rushed to Williamson County Medical Center and was taken to the emergency room. In the emergency room they shoved my front tooth back into my mouth and gave me painkillers. From there they transferred me to Vanderbilt for oral surgery. The oral sugery was the worst pain experience I have ever experienced. The surgeon had to put my mouth back together with stitches and brackets which acted like casts. After the surgery I thought I could never play baseball again because my teeth were never gonna be sturdy again. I was devastated as the recovery took several months and required 9 root canals. I also could not eat normal foods either which made me lose fifteen pounds. I still have scar tissues on my lips and teeth that are decaying. Everytime I look in the mirror I see and remember my accidental

After we warmed up it was time to play the final game. We were the home team so we were in the field first. I was playing center field and it was so hot outside that I felt like I was going to melt. When the umpire yelled, ”Play Ball!” I jumped up on my feet and was ready for the first pitch. On the very first pitch the batter hit the ball straight to me. I watched the ball go up in the air and I was putting my glove up in the air ready to catch the ball but then I lost track of it. My sunglasses did not help me with the sun. I was trying to find the ball, but then SMACK! The ball hit me straight in the mouth and I fell to the ground like a sack of…

Pow! Right smack in my forehead crushing my skull. The metal baseball bat knocked in my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old me was playing in the yard and my brother purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was intrigued by what he was doing so I started wandering over to like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother he was so focused on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him he had just set up to hit another ball. He hits the ball, but on his back rotation, the bat makes contact with my head. I fell hard on the pavement. Before I went unconscious I heard my…

POW! Right smack in my forehead leaving a dent and a gash right in my skull. The metal baseball bat swooped around and made hard contact with my skull. It was a warm sunny day in the middle of the summer. Joey, my brother, was hitting tennis balls over my house. Little 10 year old I was playing in the yard. My brother (who had more brains than I have had) purposely pushed me far away so he wouldn’t hit me while he was swinging. Oh how I was a stupid little kid. I was so intrigued by that darn bat and ball going over the house I just had to get a closer look. I started wandering over to him, like how not knowing little kids do. As I approached my brother, he was so convene on himself that he did not see me. When I finally reached him, he had…

It was the day that I had been contemplating for weeks. It was finally my first softball game as an Outlaw, and I was as nervous as long-tailed dog in a room full of rocking chairs. I was determined to defeat the rival team as the pitcher. I wasn’t feeling very confident in the first few innings of the game. Then, it hit me. Something snapped inside of me that made me so furious that we were losing. What happened next blew my mind into pieces.…

Three batters, nine pitches, and three outs. That inning did not cause me any pain. Just pure pleasure of hitting the catchers mitt. The twins are now up. Boy I would like to make this stadium go crazy. I have the perfect situation. I will strike the first two batters out and the last one will hit a home run. So both of the first two batters go down looking. Here he comes the last batter. He is shaking in his pants like a young child about a get his first ever shot from the doctor. He steps into the box and gets ready. The pitcher clamps onto me a little tighter this time. He winds up and flings me towards home plate. Bang, it is like I was shot out of a cannon. I make it just over the right field wall and the crowd goes wild. Children cheering and fathers jumping up and down. I land right in the center of a young mans glove. He is now my owner. It was a go run I had in the big leagues, but we all must move on and explore the next adventure of life. At least I am out of the…

It was not a clinking sound, like the ones you get on grounders, it was a crack. The sound was beautiful, I have heard this sound before but not as glorious, it sounded like the gates of heaven opening up. The tingling sensation you get when you get a bad hit, was not there. I cannot describe the feeling of when the big yellow ball hits your bat, it is something you have to do yourself to fully understand the beautiful feeling. I dropped the bat and bolted to first, knowing that I was going to be able to sprint to second. I rounded first, like a race car does around a turn. I look into right field I see the tall lanky right fielder still running for the ball that was at least another 30 feet ahead of her. Huffing and puffing as my lungs start to get heavy because of the adrenaline. Now noticing that I am going so fast, Kenzie is only a few feet in front of me, I can not get too close or we will both be called out. Slowing down just enough to see that where my father had once been sitting, is empty. I then remembered how hot it was, it felt like the sun was melting on us. So my dad asked if I wanted some drinks. Of course I wanted drinks so he left. At this point I was at third and I slowed down thinking that was all I was going to get out of the hit. The thought that my dad was not here to see it made me feel like their was a hole in my…

It is the bottom of the ninth and I was last at bat. The ball came zooming towards me at a high rate of speed. The vibration of metal meeting leather rang out in my hands. No hesitation was made. I dropped the bat and ran as fast as I could to first base. My coach was telling me to keep going because the ball was fumbled. I rounded third base and my coach motioned for me to take it home with a slide. Down I went. Dust was flying. The crowd was standing and cheering loudly as the referee motions and yells, “Safe!” All I heard was screaming as dust still loomed the air around me. I could manage to see my team going wild, jumping, and screaming. Everyone seemed to be celebrating except me.…

It was an amazing time and i was imagining me in the hall of fame and being one of the best baseball players ever. We get back to our dorm and we find out we are going to face. It was the best team in California and they were projected to win the whole tournament. We were all so nervous and trying to focus. We ended up winning the game 5 to 4 with me hitting 2 homeruns. We were onto the championship game. It was view online by thousands of people and everybody was watching us. It was the most nervous I have even been for a game. A lot of people were watching us and everybody was trying to stay calm and act like nobody's watching. That calmed everybody down. It was the 7th inning and it was a tie game. We were up to bat against a pitcher that was throwing 80 miles per hour. Our lead off hitter got on base with a walk. The next hitter got hit by the pitch. He got a base hit and the bases were loaded with no outs. I was up to bat and I was very nervous and was thinking not to try too hard and try to get a hit. My coach called me over and said “ Don’t be nervous, it’s just like a normal at bat, you don’t need be overly anxious and try to be a hero.” That helped me out a lot, I was calm and was trying to do nothing special. I swing and miss at the first pitch. The second was a ball outside, it was a 1-1 count. The next pitch was a fastball right down the middle. I took my hardest swing I could and I hit the ball right on the…

I had struck out most of the up-bats before that (I wasn’t necessarily the best baseball player back then). However, I was completely ready for the ball to come at me. I grasped the handle of the cold, hard bat tightly. The ball flew right over the home plate, and I hit it with all the power I had left in my body. The ball went soaring, looking like a white bird migrating south. The ball landed unquestionably far into right field, and as soon as it did, I started to sprint to first base. I decided that it would be safe to round to second base. I had already been past second base when the player playing right field got to the ball. I made it to third base, wondering if I could sprint home. I decided to wait, but I clearly could have ran to home plate. It took a while to process what had just happened. I had just hit a two-run RBI triple! I hadn’t even noticed the two runners on base come home, since I was really in the moment. Our team got through the inning, and it was my turn to pitch. This was only the second time that I had ever pitched while playing baseball! I ran out to the mound, and I started to warm up with the catcher. I rolled the hard, slightly dirty ball in my fingertips. “You can do this, Nathan,” I thought to myself nervously. “The whole team is relying on you.” After a bit of time, I was able to strike out two players and get a groundout to end the…

Through all these thoughts I heard my coach tell me to go warm up. I jogged down to the bullpen and began to toss with the catcher. After I had warmed up I began to pitch. I threw my first pitch right to the catcher's glove and knew that all the offseason work I had put in would pay off and I would dominate the opposing team. After I had finished warming up I went and sat on the bench to look at the opposing team’s pitcher and talk to my teammates. Ten minutes later and it was time to take the field for the first time. We jogged on to the field and began to warm up and prepare for the game. I threw seven more pitches and knew I was ready for the game. The first batter walked up to the plate and dug in, I got my sign from the catcher and began my wind up. I released the ball and it began flying towards the plate. The batter swung and fouled it away. I got a new ball and then got another sign from the catcher. I started my wind up again and released the ball again this time the batter swung and connected. I saw the ball soaring through the sky towards the outfield fence, it continued towards the fence and…

It was an ordinary day in Spring City, sun was beaming, there was a blue sky, everything was perfect. It was the fifth inning in my softball game, and I was next up to bat, I grabbed my batting gloves quickly pulling them over each one of my fingers, next my helmet sliding it over my hair, which is in a ponytail, and my blue bat with black and gold writing on the steel it's a shiny bat with a loud shlinnng sound . As I arrive to home plate I can see my Mom, Dad, and Brother in the stands, they’re waving at me and giving me a thumbs up they were moving their hands back and forth. I dropped to the floor. I heard footsteps and looked up. “Are you okay?” people were asking me in a concern voice. I stood up and answered “Yes.”. The coach told everybody “Okay do what you guys were doing.” and lead me to the benches. I sat down. A few minutes later the refe was out on the field. The coach started to walk over to me and asked me “Do you think you can play?” I replied “Yes.” “You can play right field.” I jogged over there I stopped and then the dizziness started up again. I felt like I was going to throw up. I slowly walked over to my coach and told him and went to the benches. The first batter stood to bat and then that was when I started to throw up, I looked over my shoulder and saw my mom, dad, grandmother, and sisters all walking toward the game. I saw my mom get super mad. Just a few minutes later she took me to urgent care. My mom gave me a plastic bag. My mom started to eat her dinner and told me not to throw up. Finally, it felt like Christmas morning, with a twist. I had never felt this way about anything before. A form of happiness, while the insides of my stomach wanted to see the light of day. Everything is twisting around like the cheesy dance moves they show at the stadium, but I’m still excited. Nervous for potential of what today holds. Once in a movie that I saw, they showed a man about to play for the Yankees, stop and stare at himself fully dressed in his uniform. Naturally, I did the same thing after putting on my uniform, pants, and matching socks. Blue, my favorite color, 9, my favorite number, pinstripes and high socks, I was ready. I always imagined this day and in reality it was so far from what I ever could have imagined. This is when I found out that the game is actually not as a simple as it appears. In fact it is something like an onion, with layers and layers, each of which an important part of the whole thing. I imagined I would be great at this game right away. Why? Well I loved it more than anyone else, I thought that counted for something. The truth is, it does, just not more than skill. I was hitting near the bottom of the order, but I was one of the younger players. I finally had my shot to step in the box. I walk slowly staring down the pitcher, trying to imagine that he was fearful of what I could do. I took my stance, making up my own routine. The wind-up, and suddenly everything slowed down. Stich by stich the ball rotated in. I was so nervous. Was…
