Movie Gladiator vs Real Life
Comparing Real Vs. Movie Commodus In the movie “Gladiator”, Emperor Commodus is portrayed as an unstable and neurotic sadist who killed his own father for the throne of the Roman Empire. Real history has no solid proof that Commodus, while unstable, killed his father Marcus Aurelius. He was actually made co-emperor at the age of 5 (Heritage). However, the sexual relations he had with his sibling is in fact true, but it was not with the sister Lucilla as shown in the movie, but rather with another sister. Lucilla did plot to kill her brother, which is a similarity between the movie and real history. Once Commodus found out about her plot, he exiled her and later executed her along with his wife Crispina who did not appear in the movie. While in real life, Lucilla is executed, she ends up outliving her brother in the film (Cavazzi). The length of time that Commodus was in power in the film does not reflect reality. He in fact ruled for 12 years after his father’s death (Cavazzi). Much like in the movie, Commodus enjoyed gladiator fights and willingly participated in some of them. However, the people were not impressed with his fighting and started losing support and respect for him. Both in the film and in reality, Commodus would never fight fairly. For example, in “Gladiator”, Commodus stabs Maximus before their fight giving himself an advantage. The real Commodus would fight in Gladiatorial games with the finest weapons, while his opponents would barely be given any weapons (Cavazzi). Instead, he would fight against amputees and inexperienced fighters, making sure that he would always win (Ancient Standard). His death, although not at the hands of a fictional Maxiums, was at the hands of a gladiator, Narcissus, who was chosen to assassinate him by strangling him in his sleep by those closest, such as his Mistress (Heritage). He was viewed as one of the worst emperors of the Roman Empire.

The movie never showed Marcus Aurelius in his youth when he was the ruler, but only showed when he was a dying man. Of course, the movie was not based off Marcus Aurelius, but it could have gone more in depth of what his beliefs were on life and his citizens. The movie kind of represents Rome as a great city, but in reality, while Aurelius was the Emperor, Rome was not all that great. Aurelius went through a tough time during his reign. He spent most of the times defending his empire against the Parthians, Germans, and Britons. The movie also shows him getting killed by his son Commodus, but he really died of a plague during another war in which he was trying to defend the territory of…

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000), was the first film set in the ancient world produced since the 1960s. Since then, there have been many more films made set in the ancient world. The question is, why was Gladiator able to revive the ancient world genre? After seeing films like Ben-Hur and Spartacus, two of the greatest films ever made set in the ancient world. it is hard not to see the cinematic cues that Gladiator takes from these films. Ben-Hur follows the story of Judah Ben-Hur after he was betrayed by his childhood friend and seeks revenge against the man who wronged. In Gladiator, we have Maximus go on a quest for vengeance after the new emperor has ordered him executed and kills his family. From Ben-Hur we know that this kind of story is not one likely to go our of fashion. Even modern movies that are not set in the ancient world have a story like this.…

In Jerry Toner’s book The Day Commodus Killed a Rhino: Understanding the Roman Games, the reader is introduced into the violent, blood thirsty society that is the Roman Empire. In the prologue to the book, Toner writes “One modern writer described these ‘bloodthirsty human holocausts’ as ‘by far the nastiest blood-sport ever invented. He claimed that ‘the two most quantitatively destructive institutions in History are Nazism and the Roman Gladiators’.” The Roman Empire, as a whole, was a violent society. Their violence though, was something that was celebrated and embodied by Romans. In Jerry Toner’s book The Day Commodus Killed a Rhino: Understanding the Roman Games, it becomes evident through the Romans “bread and circus” society, that being…

A gladiator was a trained warrior who fought bloody battles to entertain the ancient romans. According to tradition, gladiators were introduced to Rome in 264 B.C., when Decimus Junius Brutus had three pairs of gladiators fight during his father's funeral. The games soon became very popular soon after. The gladiatorial games could be compared to that of a present day circus. Gladiators were usually prisoners of wars, prisoners who committed serious crimes, or slaves. The Romans built many structures and amphitheaters such as the Colosseum. The Colosseum could seat up to fifty thousand to eighty thousand, but usually had an average audience of approximately fifty thousand. The amphitheater had the most updated technology of the time. For…

He was pushed into leadership at an early age, which probably led to his eventual downfall. This was not only because of the previous losses in his family, but because his father longed for a child of his own blood to succeed him. As the years passed and Commodus grew, it was apparent that Commodus was very unlike his determined, prestigious father - he lacked work ethic and an interest in government affairs, a trait that would not leave him even in adulthood. He developed a love for gladiator battles, which led many to believe he was a product of an affair between his mother and a gladiator. After all, he shared few traits with his…

The movie’s plotline still loosely follows the series of events that actually took place but has changed quite a lot of the facts. Gladiator warps the facts here because Marcus Aurelius supposedly was murdered by Commodus on the eve of this victory but Aurelius in fact passed away before going out to claim another land. Marcus did conquer many tribes and lands as emperor but did not in fact have a legendary general named “Maximus Decimus Meridius”. The events that actually took place in our historical timeline involve Marcus Aurelius passing away but not at the hand of his son Commodus. The official story states that Aurelius died from plague but some suspect that he was in fact murdered by Commodus. According to historical sources, Commodus was in fact a man of ill worth but Aurelius did give Commodus succession to the…

“THIS IS SPARTA”, a famous quote from the Hollywood movie 300 (2006), is this movie by Zack Snyder true to what really happen? Sparta was a city-state in south west of Ancient Greece with a strict set of eugenics. Sparta was one of the two biggest and strongest city-states and is considered to have the strongest Army of its time. Persia was the super power of its time, it had expanding borders due to conquering and Persia had it eyes on Greece. After first failing to conquer Greece ten years earlier, Persia had returned to finish the job. The Battle of Thermopylae is the story of Sparta and its allies defending against the much bigger Persian Army and it is one of the most famous ‘last stand’ stories of all time. The movie depiction of Sparta and the Battle of Thermopylae is filled with untruths but actual Sparta was different in how the government was run, in the details, and in who actually fought against the Persians.…

Milo and Clodius were political opponents in Ancient Roman times. They could be considered the Sharks and Jets of Ancient Rome feuding against each other like gangs, except they were opposites politically. Milo was a man of the Senate and Clodius was a man of Caesar, so they opposed each other before the brutal attack and murder of Clodius. These men were political opponents in the 53 BCE elections that were postponed a number of times before due to the violence of the politicians. The tensions were mounting in this case before the murder even happened. Milo was a very angry man who incited many of these fights. During these battles Milo’s men killed Clodius. Milo, even though he didn’t actually murder Clodius is equally as guilty because of his men’s actions.…

Yes he is, not just according to Aristotle, but also to the modern definition. Why wouldn’t he be a hero, he puts his life on the line for others. He is well respected by others, has many admirable qualities, and does not portray an ounce of selfishness. Even when Commodus had made a sly comment about how his troops slaughtered Maximus’s family, Maximus still gave Commodus the respect an emperor deserves. A hero does not have to follow the requirements of Aristotle’s definition to be considered a tragic hero. “Gladiator” was filmed in 1999, versus Aristotle’s definition which was created during the time of 300 B.C. Things change overtime, in the near future the modern definition won’t be as relevant either another new definition will be created. The definition of a tragic hero evolves along with society. As long as society keeps changing as well will the…
