Even though the movie Pocahontas had correct information, it had errors that were different from reality. Some things were some what correct but not completely accurate. The movie also provides educational information for children. Pocahontas was mainly about an adventurous Indian girl, but it included information about english settlers. Pocahontas had a main character as Captain John Smith, but in Pocahontas 2, the english main character is John Rolfe.

There were definitely some correct things about the movie. In Pocahontas, John Smith gave his compass to the Indians. Likewise, in both reality and in the film, Pocahontas saves John Smith. Also, there are tensions and killing between the Powhatans and British. Also, the colony of Jamestown

Overall, I found this film very surprising. I never realized how many Native American achievements that have been overlooked in today’s society. Native Americans have done so much to affect the formation of today’s country that it is astonishing. They have made so many contributions that I had never realized prior to this film. I thought that some of the most important contributions were irrigation techniques and medical procedures. Religion also played a vital role in shaping America today. Native Americans literally were involved in the development of nearly all aspects of America including sports and food. This film is an important one because it shines light on the long forgotten Native Americans. They made contributions in architecture, fishing, schools, industry materials, and government to name a few. I enjoyed the film because it is a celebration of Native Americans cultural contributions. I never realized how much has been overlooked. The film is also effective in disproving countless stereotypes that depict the typical Native American as some sort of savage warrior who is illiterate and misinformed. This could not be more far from the truth and must be corrected. Most of these stereotypes have been shaped by Hollywood television. It’s important to eliminate these stereotypes of Native Americans. Today, I believe that when most people think of an Indian they think of a crazy half naked man screaming through the forest with bows and arrows. This is contrary to the truth that many Indian societies were incredibly civilized and organized. This occurred in many different ways many of which have been incorporated into American life today. In the end, this film was very effective in shining light upon the issue. I think it’s great that this video has become so widespread and I hope that this trend will continue. That way, more people can understand the issue at hand. I cannot believe that some individuals can be so naïve and that…

What I learned from this visit was that only 350 men came into Jamestown and survived on an unknown land at first. Also Indians had fire inside their houses to smoke their houses so that mice would not be able to destroy their food. Indians also built canoes made out of Cyprus, most of them grew near the water and they built it with rocks. Indian women farmed while the men fought war with other tribes and they went hunting. I also learned that Chesapeake meant…

Pocahontas saved John Smith's life,So clearly Pocahontas didn't save John Smith’s life.John Smith lied about Pocahontas saving him since she was a big deal “FAMOUS”. The settings I imagined while reading the book were very different from what I saw in the movie. Some of the characters such as Kenny and Byron were shorter than I imagined, but Joetta was taller than I imagined her and Grandma Sands looked very different than I imagined. I thought she would be tiny, really old looking, and very mean. She wasn’t really any of those. The settings were very different such as the church and the Watsons house. I thought they would be more dated. Their house wasn’t modern, but wasn’t as old as I imagined from the context clues in the book. Overall I liked the movie better because it had more information about racism and I felt I learned more about it. I think I would like the movie even better if it had Rufus as a character, but it was still a great…

The novel, Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma, author, Camilla Townsend, a history professor at Colgate University has investigated through many written records from the seventeenth-century. During this time in history many things were written down in journals, maps were created and artifacts such as agricultural tool and body remains were left behind. Through these primary sources Townsend has written a biography that focuses on the life of America’s most influential female Indian, Pocahontas and some of her fellow Powhatan tribe members. She revealed how the impact of gaining independence in the New World was challenging, brutal and very conflicted. During this time, European and Native American’s both had the hopes of gaining individual…

    9. Pocahontas (63): Pocahontas was the daughter of Chief Powhatan. She saved John Smith when he trespassed. Powhatan let Smith go in exchange for weapons, beads and trinkets. She was captured in 1614 by Jamestown to try and blackmail Powhatan. She ended up converting to Christianity, changed her named to Rebecca, and married, had a kid and moved to London with John Rolfe. For the most part the History surrounding "Braveheart" is accurate, but there are several significant people and events which simply do not match up historically. After watching the movie and reviewing the history behind it, it becomes clear that Hollywood felt they needed to alter several things in order to make the film more entertaining to their viewers. It is interesting to compare the depiction of the characters and events portrayed in the movie to the actual history that surrounds them.…

The new world was accurate for the most part, but there were few inaccuracies that occurred during the movie. For one, it is not historically proven that the relationship between Pocahontas and John Smith was a romance relationship, as portrayed in the movie. In The New World, Smith leaves Jamestown because of orders from the king, when in reality it has been proven he left Jamestown in 1609 because of a wounded knee when his powder horn exploded. In the movie Pocahontas is shown being given over to the settlers, this is inaccurate because Pocahontas was kidnapped from her people and brought to Jamestown by captain Argyll. Yet another inaccuracy was when the English landed they are shown being watched by the Indians and left alone to explore the land, but really, the English were attacked by the Algonquin’s, who had lived there, and were not welcoming to new settlers. In the first few minutes of the movie John Smith is shown exploring the region, but according to history he was chained thought the voyage and spend another month after his arrival in Jamestown in handcuffs, and explored the regions after his handcuffs had been taken off. Windfield, one of the settlers in Jamestown is shown being shot by the settlers, when the truth is that he lived until 1630, and is credited with writing several books on the Jamestown settlement. John Smith is shown with tattoos on his shoulder and chest, this is inaccurate, because the practice died out in Europe before they came to Jamestown, and only way this could have been accurate if he got one from the Indians, but no such thing was shown. One the biggest blunders in the movie was the fact the Pocahontas and her people were not as clothed as shown in the movie, during that time most Indians wore very little to no clothing. There is not historical…

John Smith was a seasoned veteran of survival and was not a professional writer. The second characteristic of Exploration Literature is written to a specific audience such as the king, queen, and the backers. These journals or texts specifically describe their lifestyles, daily struggles, and document important events. The third characteristic of Exploration Literature is that these texts are what literary historians call “history in the making.” In Smith’s text he writes, “Now ever once in four or five days, Pocahontas with her attendants brought so much provision that saved many of their lives, that else for all this had starved with hunger” (92). This Event would be considered as history in the making because Pocahontas brought provisions to the colonists which ultimately caused the survival of Jamestown. The fourth characteristic of Exploration Literature is that these texts are quite ethnocentric. Ethnocentrism is the evaluation of other people’s culture according to the standards of one's own culture. In Smith’s text he says, “each hour the fury of the savages, when god the patron of all good endeavors, in that desperate extremity so changed the hearts of the savages” (84). In this passage, smith is referring to the Native Americans as savages. Ironically in this passage the natives are actually trying to help them with presenting provisions. Although the Native…
