What’s the deal with movie trailers? The excitement that comes with a long-awaited movie trailer is almost as good as watching the movie itself. Over the course of my life, I have been excited over many movie trailers. I clearly recall 8th grader me, back in 2008, when director J. J. Abrams released, what “youtuber” StarBoy1701 commented, “the mother of all teaser trailers” for his upcoming film Star Trek (2009) on his website. This didn’t satisfy me at all. It didn’t show any scenes from the film and made me want a longer trailer even more. Unfortunately for me, and I’m sure many others, it wasn’t until over a year later when a full theatrical trailer was released. I can’t even describe my feelings when the first theatrical trailer released. I can tell you, however, that I watched it so many times that I unintentionally memorized every aspect of the trailer; dialogue, music, sounds, everything. I took in every detail I could and more. I thought for hours about how each scene shown in the trailer connected with each other. And I watched that trailer, and the next theatrical trailer, every day until the film finally came out. And even then, I still watch the trailer from time to time. And each time it gives me goosebumps. As of right now, I am still awaiting a trailer to the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness (2012), but alas; no luck so far. It’s quite obvious that I’m obsessed with movie trailers. But this got me thinking; what’s the deal with movie trailers?
