In this essay I am going to discuss Mr. Birling character in depth and advise the actor who plays him on how he should be presented.
Mr Birling is a ‘heavy looking, rather portentous man in his middle fifties’ who is head of the family. Since he is next socially superior wife after his wife the actor should have a sense of power and authority in the room and be sat at the head of the table to emphasize this. He has ‘fairly easy manners’ and is ‘rather provincial in his speech’ suggesting his bringing up and poor education, as we learn, he made his money and worked his way up unlike the Crofts. Mr Birling should be dressed in smart outfit of the era to demonstrate his ‘new money’ wealth. He should appear to be very pleased with the engagement of his daughter to Gerald croft as he is in hope of merging their companies, so I would advise the actor to appear smug and should flatter Gerald. Also since Mr. Birling made his own money he has come for a poor background and this can be seen when his wife reprimands him for praising the cook, therefore whilst he is powerful he also lacks education and manners.
During their dinner Mr Birling begins to make a speech and the actor should stand so to captivate and hold everyone’s attention. Mr Birling considers himself to be a ‘hard-headed business man’ and in his speech, a key moment in the play he states a list of wrong predictions. I would advise the actor playing him to act very arrogant and conceited as if he knows it all. He predicts that ‘we have passed the worst of it’ and are in a time of ‘steadily increasing prosperity’, as well as that ‘Germany don’t want war, all of which the audience will know to be false. This would lead the in questioning his judgement. During his speech Mr. Birling refers to his kids as ‘youngsters’ and informs them they have nothing to worry of. At this point I think the actor should appear
