In the opening paragraph, there is a very peaceful and ordinary scene set by the author.
This scene is set with the description in the paragraph. “Warm and clean” is how the room is described and the drawn curtains implies a relaxed, safe atmosphere. With the soda water, whisky, and ice cubes ready, it is obvious that they were planning to have a very stress-free afternoon. An image of a very sunny day is given because the room is warm and the curtains would not be drawn if there is not a sunny day. Three adjectives that would describe the mood and atmosphere would be relaxed, serene, and ordinary. 2. The time where we get a sense that things are not going as well as usually is when we Mr. Maloney was acting strange. He was not saying much and also drank his whisky in one big gulp, which is unusual. “And as he spoke he did an unusual thing. He lifted his glass and drained it in one …show more content…
swallow although there was still half of it, or a at least half of it, left.” 3.
Mr. Maloney was telling his wife about how he wanted to divorce her. This can be inferred as a result of what Mr. Maloney said at the end as well as Mrs. Maloney’s reactions. “Of course I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after” implies that he will be going away from her as he will be sending money for support as well as making sure she’s looked after. “But there needn’t really be any fuss” implies that what will happen may have some conflicts which a divorce would contain. Mrs. Maloney also reacts as if she suffered a large loss which is what a divorce would be. Therefore, Mr. Maloney most probably told her about wanting a divorce. 4. Three adjectives that would describe Mrs. Maloney would be impulsive, deliberate, and persuasive. Mrs. Maloney suddenly murdered her husband without thinking too much about it, which is a very impulsive thing to do. She is also deliberate with her very elaborate scheme to make sure she get caught. Finally she is persuasive as she was able to persuade the detectives to eat the murder
weapon. 5. Throughout the story, both Mrs. Maloney as well as our perspective of her changes very drastically. In the beginning of the story Mrs. Maloney is very loving and caring of her husband and is quite innocent. After Mrs. Maloney murdered her husband, she became a psychopath as she felt no remorse for her actions. She was also very casual with how she dealt with the murder. When the detectives arrived to her house, our perspective of her was that she is a very deceitful and unhonest person. Finally with the final sentence “And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle.” gives us the impression that she is mentally insane. 6. In my opinion, I think that she is a stone cold killer because she didn't feel regret after and it didn't seem at all that she thought anything of her murder. She acted to make sure she would not get caught by creating an alibi for herself as well as disposing of the evidence. Remorse was not felt by Mrs. Maloney and she seemed to find it amusing because she giggled when the detectives were discussing the murder weapon. 7. It is very evident that the murder was indeed an unplanned act of desperation rather than a planned act. There is no evidence to suggest that she planned it as there was no motive for her to murder him until her husband came and told her something. Only a few minutes passed between this event and the murder, so there was not adequate time to plan it out. Additionally, it was conducted rather impulsively and suddenly.
