Reaction Of Alcohols
Purpose: The following experiment will study the chemical reactions of a selection of alcohols to determine the effect of the position of the OH functional group in the molecule.
Hypothesis: Suppose that the primary and secondary alcohols will react with HCL and KmnO4, and the tertiary alcohol wont react with either HCL nor KMnO4 due to the location of the OH. The carbon that is bonded to the OH in both primary and secondary still has one or two Hydrogen atoms to undergo reactions, but the carbon in the tertiary alcohol do not have any Hydrogen to undergo reactions with.
Materials: refer to the handout.
Procedure: refer to the handout.
Observation:
Alcohol | Reaction with HCL | Reaction with KMnO4 | Butanol | No reaction | Did not mix | 2-Propanol | No reaction | Mixed and the color turned red | 2-Methyl-2-Propanol | Change in color (yellow) | Bubbles and turned pink |
Discussion:
Butanol: H3C-CH2-CH2-CH2-OH 2-Propanol: H3C-CHOH-CH3
2-Methyl-2-Propanol:
2-Methyl-2-Propanol is only alcohol reacted with HCL 2-Methyl-2-Propanol+HCL=====>2-chloro-2-methylpropane+ H2O substitution reaction
2-Propanol+KMnO4=====>Propan-2-one and for 2-Methyl-2-Propanol it can not react with KMnO4
Butanol can be used as a fuel, it is similar to gasoline. It can be used in any vehicles without any modifications. It can be prodused by Biomass. It has the same negative environmental impact like gasoline.
Sources Of Error:
We did not wait enough for the reaction to begin. We did not put enough chemicals.
Conclusion:
Depending on the experiment results, the location of the OH plays a big role in the reactions of alcohol Butanol did not react with niether HCL nor KMnO4, 2-propanol reacted with KMnO4 only.On the other hand, 2-Methyl-2-Propanol reacted with both HCL and KMnO4. So we conclude
