Mrs. Luella bates jones can be characterized as a strong minded person because when roger snatched her pocket book he fell over right on his back and she kicked him in the blue jean sitter picking him up by his shirt and shook him until his teeth rattled. She can be also characterized as a trustworthy person leavening her pocket book right on her day bed and her apartment door right open. She is probably not the richest person because instead of a stove she has a gas burner and instead of a refrigerator she has an ice box, she carries a lot of her belongings with her because the fifteen fourteen year old fell over on his back when he tried to lift the pocket book. Martin Luther King Jr. was the acknowledged leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. King earned several degrees and was a bright man. His “Letter from Birmingham Jail” was written in April 1963, while he was in jail in Birmingham, Alabama, for acts of civil disobedience (499). His letter is a response to a letter signed by clergyman criticizing his actions towards civil rights. The clergymen believed that his actions were “untimely.” King states ,”if I sought to answer all the criticisms that cross my desk…I would have no time for constructive work” (500). He usually does not respond to letter that criticize his work and actions, but he believed the clergymen were men of genuine good and they meant no harm. King was president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and they had affiliates all throughout the South. King believed he was supposed to spread freedom. He agreed that if Birmingham ever needed him that he would be there. “Injustice everywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” (500). King used an approach to resolve issues in nonviolent manners. It consisted of sit-ins, marches, and etc. Nonviolent direct action would create a tension that an otherwise ignored subject would have to be faced. With nonviolent direct action and ignored issue would come to light and can no longer be ignored(502). After the direct-action program, King hoped that the doors to negotiation would open.…

"Martin Luther King Jr.'s letter from Birmingham Jail, which was written in April 16, 1963, is a passionate letter that addresses and responds to the issue and criticism that a group of white clergymen had thrown at him and his pro- black American organization about his and his organization's non- violent demonstrative actions against racial prejudice and injustice among black Americans in Birmingham. King writes the letter to defend his organization's actions and the letter is also an appeal to the people, both the white and black American society, the social, political, and religious community, and the whole of American society to encourage desegregation and encourage solidarity and equality among all Americans, with no stratifications according to racial differences. King's letter from Birmingham Jail addresses the American society, particularly the political and religious community of the American society. Specifically, King's letter addresses three important groups in the American society: the white American political community, white American religious community, and the black American society. King addressed these communities as the primary groups wherein racial segregation is continuously proliferated (the white American political and religious community) and points much of his arguments to and for his fellow black Americans in the society. King's main thesis in writing the Birmingham letter is that, racial segregation, or injustice to the black American society, is due to the continuous encouragement of the white American society, particularly the powerful communities in politics and religions. King defends his primary thesis all throughout the length of his letter, and the arguments that he has made to prove that his thesis is true and valid will be the focus of this rhetorical analysis. In addressing and confronting the problem of injustices among the black Americans in the American society, particularly the violence that had happened in Birmingham, and…

France, November 19, 1916 Dear Martha, I am writing this bilious letter from the deep trenches and piles of dead bodies the most recent battle, the Battle of the Somme has left behind. Before you worry, I am doing quite well, considering the bit of shrapnel that got stuck in my head while I was running among the yelling men, bloodied bodies and screaming explosives. The men are once again smoking cigarettes and talking about nonsense, joking about loathsome Germans and evading death. Unlike them, I am feeling a pit in my stomach. I can still smell the acrid black artillery smoke, and see the ghosts of friends who got shot next to me.…

Recently, some disturbing information was brought to my attention about one of Lyman Highschool's staff members. While in one of the restrooms I oveheard a convorsation about one of the theachers here at Lyman: Mrs. Neris. The other students were talking about a transgender student (who I personally do not know) and one of the mentioned that Mrs. Neris had given that student a referal for using the boy's restroom. (the student is originally female.) I was absolutely shocked, disgusted, and appalled. I felt so bad for that student. I can't imagine how embarassing and belittling that could feel. I know that a main goal of lyman higschool is to create a safe and comfortable learning environment where students can feel accepted…

The letter from the Birmingham jail still has an inspiring impact on us today. In this letter, King makes several points about issues that we still deal with such as inequality, injustice, and police brutality specifically targeted towards (or what it seems like) African Americans. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” I remember everything happening like dominos, A shooting here and a shooting there then afterwards riot here, crying there, protesting here. It didn’t just affect one place but multiple places all over the world.…
