after being told he was dead that the shock was too much for her heart. The doctors diagnosed that Mrs. Mallard collapsed from “joy that kills”. Mrs. Mallard had felt free after learning her husband was dead and realized the trapped feeling she had being feeling in her marriage. The story of an hour indicates the last hour of Mrs. Mallard’s life. The story of an hour was about the freedom that Mrs. Mallard had experienced briefly thinking her husband was dead and the controlling marriage was over only to see him walk in the door well and alive and the joyous feeling of being free was gone.
The story of the lottery takes place in a village where all the people are friends and know one another well. The people of this village are close and a have a tradition that happens every year which is called the lottery. All members of the village participate in this tradition where one person is chosen to be violently stoned by family and friends.

This drawing is a tradition that has been done every year in the village for the past seventy seven years.
In reading this story it is believed that the lottery is just that and is assumed the person who is picked will win money or a prize not that the person’s fate is death by their own family and friends. The lady named Mrs. Hutchinson who wanted to not show for the event and rebel arrived late and claimed she had forgotten what day it was. The irony of Mrs. Hutchinson being late and wanting to stand for her beliefs was the one who won “the lottery” and has now been picked the one to be stoned. Mrs. Hutchinson puts on an act of happiness to be there and is friendly to all until she is picked and than her true self is shown and her selfishness comes out. Mrs. Mallard and Mrs. Hutchinson in both stories died of deaths not foreseen to a
reader.
It was not at first obvious in the stories that these two women would die and the lives of both women were not shoeing who they really were or the true feelings that either women had. Mrs. Mallard did not show how she really felt about her husband or her marriage until the news of her husband’s death and thinking she was finally free. Mrs. Hutchinson thought in showing up late to the event would benefit her and in fact this caused her to be the one to be chosen to be stoned. The stories are both a bit relevant to today’s society as it is with the assumptions people are quick to make and the stereotyping of others. There is not a problem in stereotyping others until one is caught themselves. Society tends to arrive at assumptions and stereotyping until the whole story or truth is known.
