Drawing on appropriate evidence from Chapter 5, describe how groups can influence people in positive and in negative ways.
This essay will draw on evidence from chapter 5, 'Starting with Psychology'. From this we will look at three experiments, ' Robbers Cave experiment' spoors et.al., (2011). Then to look at 'Asch's experiment' spoors et.al.,( 2011). Lastly we will look at 'Kondo's Story' spoors et.al., (2011). In turn we will describe how group membership has influenced peoples thoughts , feelings and behaviour in positive and in negative ways. We will provide evidence to support these influences.
'First, to draw on the positive and negative influences of Robbers Cave experiment'. spoors et.al.,(2011). Boys were divided into two groups, both groups as expected conformed to group membership. The groups showed positive influences with behaviour by cohering and showed involvement in norms of behaviour, evidence of this was the sharing of jokes and secret codes given in spoors et.al.,(2011).
However , a competition was set up between the groups, this had a negative influence on the groups behaviour and feelings towards one another. The groups loyalty and solidarity degenerated and the groups once positive behaviour turned into negative hostility. Evidence of this was with name calling, the groups became prejudice and considerably aggressive to one another. given in spoors et.al.,(2011). Although sportsmanship had clearly degenerated between the groups, positive behaviour and group membership was at its height within the groups. given in spoors et.al.,(2011)
The experimenters manipulated the group situation further, activities that were introduced proved to have a positive influence on the feelings and behaviour of both groups, evidence shows the groups once again became co-operative with one another and worked together. given in spoors et.al.,(2011).This was a positive influence on their group membership.
