In my opinion Ms. Gambrill’s critique is valid. Currently in Los Angeles County four social workers face felony child abuse and neglect charges. The charges were initiated after the death of 8 year old Gabriel Hernandez who suffered repeated beatings from both his mother
and her boyfriend. The four social workers involved were responsible for Gabrielle’s well-being and adequate protection. There was mounting visible evidence regarding Gabrielle’s abuse, moreover, past documented history of abuse by the mother. However, the socials workers failed to execute the necessary procedures to assure Gabrielle’s well-being and safety. In addition, information was ascertained that corroborates the social workers provided false documentation in regards to the case.
This is just an example of one case; however there are several cases that parallel this case. The ongoing child maltreatment proves that more in depth research is needed to effect change. The use evidence based practice can provide research that will aid in producing effective treatment for abusers, transparent cost efficient programs at both state and federal levels that produce data that will result in effective treatment.
