The Ballad of Mulan has inspired many Chinese women to defy traditional gender roles. In the last five years the traditional Chinese poem has been published in various versions of children's books. In that time frame the story has changed a little. In the movie, Mulan takes her dad’s armor, and her horse and leaves to go fight in the army. In the poem, Mulan has to go and buy all of her stuff like her horse, armor, saddle and things she need. “On every scroll there’s Father’s name, father has no grown-up son, Mulan has no elder brother. I want to buy a saddle and horse, and serve in the army in Father’s place.” (“Ballad” 12-16). In the movie, Mulan had everything so she didn’t have to go and buy everything from different places.
