Mulan Heroism
What makes a hero different? What separates a hero from the rest of the world? Most people think of Batman or Superman when they hear the word “hero”. However, normal humans can be heroes, too. A hero bravely does what they can to help others and doesn’t give up. Although it may be difficult, heroism means to push through challenges to help other people and to be devoted to their cause, even though a hero isn’t always perfect. Heroes overcome personal obstacles to work for the benefit of others. They conquer their issues for the good of everyone else and work to help others. For example, Frederick Douglass talks in his autobiography about how, even though he was free, he was scared of speaking up. He ends up overcoming his fear of being discriminated against and becomes an important figure in the abolitionist movement. Similarly, in the movie Mulan, the hero, Mulan, has to go through tough and grueling military training in order to save her father. Mulan does what she does so that someone she loves could live, even if it has the possibility of losing her life. Both Frederick Douglass and …show more content…
Heroes stay true to purpose. An example of this is in the poem “A Man” by Nina Cassian where a soldier, after losing his leg, “set himself to do / everything with twice as much enthusiasm” (15-16). Even though he is disabled, this man wants to do as much as he can. He works with even more effort than before, just so he can do what he wants. Like the subject of “A Man”, Welles Crowther from the video “Man in the Red Bandana” reaches his goal by being determined. He has a dream of saving lives, meaning to become a firefighter, when he becomes a victim of the 9/11 attacks. Crowther goes into action, saving as many people as he can when he loses his life. Both the soldier in “A Man” and Welles Crowther do not let anything stop them from achieving their goal. They keep on trying, even when there are setbacks, or if it means losing their

Heroes are able to recover from a defeat where a normal man would stop trying and give in to his dark feelings. One example of this is, Tristan Segers he was a normal military soldier until his vehicle was blown up along with one of his legs. “After nearly two years of surgeries and rehabilitation in Texas, Segers, a handsome 28-year-old, moved back to Snohomish County last week.”(SB, Pg. 58). This shows Tristan Segers ability to recover as well as his tenacity. He took all that pain and he…

Throughout history, there have been an incalculable number of heroes; that can be through reality or fictitious. From viewing the clips from this assignments and reading various articles regarding heroism, there are multiple aspects that determine exactly what a hero should be. In regards to the Spiderman video, Aunt May explains that a hero is someone that is courageous, self-sacrificing, and sets examples for others. Likewise, an article I read describes a hero as someone who is courageous, selfless, humble, patient, and caring. In my opinion, a hero is an individual who cares more about the life of others than themselves; they would do anything in their power to protect others as well as the world around them.…

Often people have to endure tests of character in order to prove who they are. It is when people have to face great opposition that their character is truly shown; we see whether people are heroes or cowards. Those who are heroic always stand up for their morals and never back down and do selfless acts for the good of others. When people encounter moments where they have to face opposition they can do either of two things; they can stand up for what they believe in and do what they think is the right thing to do, or they can sit back and let someone else do it and simply try to ignore the problem. The ones who always stand up for what they believe are the people who are true heroes. People who have a heroic character will constantly rise up and speak out loud when they see that something wrong is going on. The people who are heroes are incredibly important to society, because they are the people who work for a better tomorrow; they are the people who are willing to sacrifice themselves for something better.…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Heroism is being capable of being mentally strong and has the ability to be a leader. In the poem A Man by Nina Cassian a man has lost an arm in while fighting for his country. The man knows that he “shall only be able to do things by halves.” (Line 3) Even though “the man” has lost an arm he realized that he had to “set himself to do everything with twice as much enthusiasm.” The man recognizes his limitations but still has the will in his mind to push forward and never stop living life just because of one little set back. Also, a daughter writes about her mother, Ana, who is struggling through cancer. Ana’s daughter says that even though she is going through cancer again “she gets up with a smile and still has the strength to be a mother to me.” This shows that Ana is mentally strong because she is able to care for her loved ones as for someone else they would most likely give up and not want to deal with the pain any longer, especially if they have already gone through cancer and it has come back. In addition, in the movie Mulan, the main character has to be strong and take her father’s place in the army to save his life. She has to be mentally strong to deal with all of the things that she may face when she goes to war.…

A hero can be real or fictional but either way a hero goes through the same stages and has choices to make to help others at whatever cost. Someone may not seem like they could be a hero but by doing what they can, could help make a huge difference in someone’s life. Being a hero is not always what movies and comic books make it out to be; a hero can be a regular person being generous. Making the right choices and decisions is what helps shape a person to be a hero; they don’t become one just for the fame.…

Heroes have three main traits: enough guts to ignore those who have a problem with their goals and the way they are living their life, devotion to their cause, and benevolence towards everyone, no matter what. They do their best to be brave, courageous, and have spirit; in one word, gutsy. Even though many people didn’t support her and called her a witch, Joan of Arc had the bravery and strength to continue fighting for her cause. She used her courage and spirit to ignore negative opinions from the people around her. Heroes are devoted to their cause, and are persistent in trying to reach their goals, especially through hard times. An example is Penelope, wife of Odysseus. He went away to fight in a war, and didn’t come back. “Everyone by now took for granted that he was dead, except Penelope, his wife…the hope that her husband would return was faint, but it never died.” (Mythology, Edith Hamilton.) Penelope waited twenty…

According to Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, heroism is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” Atticus is saying that to him what makes hero is someone who does something even when they know they are gonna lose but they fight anyway. For example Mrs. Dubose was taking morphine because she was dieing and was in pain but she didn’t wanna die using morphine so she got off it which is a great accomplishment but the even bigger thing is that she did knowing she was going to have to suffer through withdrawal till she passed away. A hero is not always defined about what they accomplish but the way the act whilst accomplishing something.…
