The world has changed greatly over the years. The language has evolved and culture has changed. Due to the large increase in the number of people who use mobile phones and social networking sites, people, especially young ones developed a new, non-standard form of English which we have called text speak. There are some good things and a few bad things about it. I will explain it further now. To keep things simple, text-speak is a non-standard form of English and although it seems as if it did not follow any particular patterns, text language does have some specified rules and techniques. For example, it has its own etiquette and there are some rules which people are expected to follow, courtesy and good manners are never accepted. Texting has many exclusive features, for a few examples: Typing a message entirely in capitals makes it look as if you were shouting, this is called sound representations, people also use abbreviations of short phrases like LOL which usually would mean Laughing Out Loud, this text speak feature is called an acronym. People also often use compression, clipping and ellipsis, this means that they miss out vowels and shorten down the sentences. Some text speak users spell the words they want to type phonetically or replace words and letters with symbols and numbers. You will not find much punctuation in most texts and if there is some it is probably non-standard. In many ways, using text-speak is good, efficient and useful as it saves you from wasting your time typing long messages and lets you fit information into one text which would normally, if written in standard English have to be sent in two messages no due to the limit on the text length, this saves people money and makes it easier for the receiver to read the information. Multimodal language also allows users to send messages quickly and without having to wonder how to spell some words.
