Wayne Norton starts his journal with discussing how the First World War affect the Canadian patriotic songs. He states over a decade before 1914s most musicians enjoyed playing religious themes music. Most of Canadian songs written during the war are only known by their title in today's world. Norton also discussed a few different songs
like "The Best Old Flag On Earth". When Charles Harrison composed this piece, it was such a success it motivated him to compose seven more piece of music. After Charles Harrison first success, he compose another piece but with more of a humorous style. Harrison wrote in this style after Winifred Carden composed "Line Blocked". Wayne Norton speaks on many other composers. He discuss the piece they wrote and why they wrote them. Norton described how one composer wrote in remembrance of her husband. Wayne Norton wrote this journal to show how music evolved during war times.
In conclusion, this article taught me a lot of great history about Canadian war songs. One of the topics taught me that there were many reason why different songs were created. Even though, it was talking about Canada's music, all music are evolved through all cultures. It also taught me that some songs were dedicated for fallen soldiers, and some songs were created to explain some significant points in the war. These were the few things I learned in Wayne Norton's scholarly journal.
