backup to arrive. Although many casualties and deaths occurred due to the Canadian troops fearlessness, it was a great act of courage which was and still is respected substantially. This battle was also important for the time period because it was the first poison attack with chlorine gas.
Chlorine gas is capable of ruining a person’s respiratory tracts and was the start to this deadly substance being used. After the war, chlorine gas along with others was continued to be used as a weapon such as in the holocaust and the mistakes made in Ypres helped further enhance the effectiveness of the gas attacks. Although the gas attacks and chlorine gas being used is nothing to be proud of, it was still a very important part of the 1910s and 1920s. Secondly, I chose to talk about the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 because it helped neutral ships stay safe and was one of the reasons America later entered the war. After the sinking of the Lusitania, US president Woodrow negotiated with Germany to make the deal that any neutral ship not carrying contraband was allowed to arrive safely at the port it was sailing for. This new rule was beneficial for many neutral countries such as the US themselves because the lives of many innocent people was saved. In addition, the sinking of the Lusitania provoked Americans and many people wanted war against Germany instead of staying
neutral. Although this wasn’t the primary cause of the US joining the war, it was one of the contributing factors. The sinking of this ship was an important historical event that occurred between the 1910s and 1920s because it helped another country enter the war and help end the war. Germany had a good chance of winning the war near the end; however, America built one of the strongest armies that boldly fought against Germans which made Germany ultimately take the blame. This also represented the values of most Americans because the US and their neutrality irritated many people and they valued taking part in one side of the argument only. Without the sinking of the Lusitania and America entering the war, the outcome of World War One could have been very disparate. To conclude, I included the topics of the battle of Ypres and sinking of the Lusitania because they were important events of the time period that represented the values of everyone.
In contemplation of my commercials, I chose to advertise Special Red Demerara rum, victory bonds and Canada food board. To begin with, I endorsed Special Red Demerara rum because it was a popular drink among soldiers and families to help them feel more powerful. Rum was used as a combat motivator, a medicine, and as part of the reward system for soldiers, as well as people back at home who had stressful jobs such as being a single mother. Advertising rum in my commercial would appeal to many people in Canada during the 1910s and by using techniques of bandwagon people would feel obligated to buy a bottle of the drink. I specifically chose Special Red Demerara because it was one of the most well known rum brands of that time and a lot of the drink was shipped to soldiers in war. Additionally, another product I chose to advertise was victory bonds. During World War One and especially during 1915 (the year that my segment took place) the government advertised victory bonds greatly because they needed monetary and financial help to pay for the expenses of the war. To make up for these expenses, the government sold items known as victory bonds, where one would buy a bond and in 5 to 20 years they could get their money back along with interest. Many people liked the idea of buying a victory bond because when they got their money back, they would get more than they originally had due to the interest. I chose to talk about victory bonds because in 1915, it was crucial for inhabitants of Canada to buy the bonds because the government was not capable of paying all of the combat costs without the help of the population. If it were not for victory bonds and their profit in helping Canada gain money to use at the war, our Canadian troops would have been unable to perform as successfully during battles and the number of casualties could have increased. Victory bonds played a huge role during the war in our Country so I think it was a very important product to endorse. Lastly, I chose to advertise Canada food board because during the war there was a big need for foods such as meat, fats and wheat that has to be sent overseas to Canadian troops. People not fighting in the war were recommended and guilted into eating only vegetables and fish so that everything else could be sent to the war. There are only a few items being capable of shipped to another country easily and hence there was a scarcity of food constantly and the priority for food always first went to soldiers. To help with this issue, Canada food board made effective posters to help save perishable foods and there I chose to endorse them in my segment because they perfectly illustrate the need for food and what others might have heard on the radio in the 1910s. For my music in my segment, I chose all 1910s to 1920s jazz music and I also made my voice deeper for all the commercials to make it obvious whether it’s a commercial or a topic. In conclusion, for my commercials I advertised Special Red Demerara, victory bonds and Canada food board because they were essential products to the two decades
