My father – a technician – is my idol and one of the persons that influenced me into becoming an engineer.
My father was able to buy computers into the household and that made me and my siblings familiar with technology. Whenever the computers are acting funky and are in critical conditions, my dad intentionally gathers me and my siblings up for a lecture on how to reboot the machine. It was long and boring but at the same time, we are saving a computer’s life and as well as saving money. His teachings not only relate to the computers, but as well as electronic figures that are built from scratch – wooden figures powered with motors and batteries. This was what sparked my interest because I liked creating and repairing
things. In counter to what my father was influencing, my grandmother also sparked my interest into becoming a doctor that studies herbs. My grandmother is an expert when it comes herbs and most of them are used in traditional potions that can cure illnesses. She has always kept our garden full of life; same thing that I thought a doctor would do, keeping life under control. Furthermore, I fanaticized doctors to have the ability to “revive” the dead or even grant immortality of some sort. My fantasy thoughts inspired me into becoming a doctor, one who can save people’s lives or restore their health. Contrasting from being an engineer, who are good at fixing inanimate objects and good in math, all I had to do was memorized plants and procedures of healing when being a doctor. The choice of choosing either a doctor or engineer was hard when both professions are my favorite. A doctor, in a way, is also like an engineer who “fixes” people and get them back in shape; engineers fix and restore inanimate objects or machineries back to a suitable condition. Something that drew me back from becoming a doctor was seeing blood – extracting blood from the patients, seeing another person’s intestinal innards – all this scared me. I rather see the insides of machines, where different parts act as a body in whole, and things that don’t ooze blood in front of me. Today, I am here – the eldest of seven siblings, a graduate of Patrick Henry Senior High (2015), and attending the University of Wisconsin-Stout - to accomplish another goal which is to graduate with a degree in the Computer Engineering course.
