When I was in elementary school I could not wait for music class. The music teacher there was very unique in the way he would teach music, instead of music theory we focused more on playing as we learn. From Elementary school I knew music would be a part of my life.
In our Elementary music classroom there were many xylophones and vibraphones as well as African djembes and congas. In fifth grade we had a guitar course and I knew from then on that I wanted music to be a part of my life.
Later that year we had an ensemble of xylophones, vibraphones and drums. My music teacher taught us with the Orff Approach. Originating from the German composer Carl …show more content…
Orff. We preformed and I had an amazing time. In sixth grade I joined the band and tried the clarinet out, although I learned a lot about reading music and notes, clarinet was not for me. Later in middle school I tried piano lessons. I learned even more and had much more fun but something didn't seem right. So In ninth grade for Christmas I was lucky enough to be given a drum set. It was a 5 piece kit with a hi hat and my Uncle gave me a ride crash cymbal. I later bought another crash cymbal and added a Pearl double bass pedal. I loved it, I played it over and over and begun lessons as soon as I could. I learned new techniques and to this day I love playing the drums.
Back in seventh grade I joined chorus.
I loved to sing as well and learned how to control my voice. Eighth grade came and I joined the show choir, I danced as well as sang but I soon learned that I wasn't the best dancer so I decided in ninth grade to stick to singing. In ninth grade I also joined the marching band playing the 4th bass drum (which is the largest one). I loved marching and playing, going to competitions and learning new pieces, going to football games, all of it was wonderful. I came to love the ringing in my ears from the loud sound of our band. While I was in marching band I was also in the percussion band (which was an
elective).
I was ecstatic to go to that class every other day. Learning more about drumming was a passion that I held on to with everything I had. Now that I am at Hargrave Military Academy I have been ranked as Drum Captain. I teach and mentor all of the drummers in the band. I continue to produce, write and play music and I enjoy it thoroughly, music is a part of my life and it drives me to become a better person over all. I feel like music is a huge part in my life and it makes me who I am.
