My Father's Head By Okwiri Taylor
Hi Everyone,

I read the story called "My father's head" by Okwiri Oduor, this story is colorful and a little complex. For me, it has a lot of lingoes that made the reading difficult. It's about a woman called Simbi that seems to works as a maid in a retirement home, along with her friend Bwibo. The story begins with Simbi describing what looks like a church service conducted by a priest called Ignatius, during the service the priest talked about love among relatives, and neighbors; this made her think about her father, who passes away tragically when he was hit by a tractor. Because of this memories, she began to remember how much she loved her father. Moreover a few days later, she spent several hours trying to draw him, but even when she was able to draw his body and face, she couldn't remember the shape of his head. This becomes the center of the story, as Simbi shows the drawing to Bwibo and they both tried to understand why she can't remember her father's head. Later Bwibo promised to help her to remember, but apparently, she got more than she wanted, when Simbi stated: "Perhaps that was the reason I had forgotten all about it; it was a horrible, disconcerting thing to look at" (Oduor, 2013).

What I did encounter were 2 reviews about the author, Okwiri Oduor, in one of them, the author stated "in which a young woman comes to terms with her father's death in the most remarkable way" (New Internationalist, 2014). Certainly, the end was brilliant, but the route to that end was a bumpy ride. Furthermore, the other review talked a little more about the story, but with some impressions, like when they said that she "tries to remember and draw what her father looked like but cannot remember his features" (SyndiGate Media Inc., 2017). When she clearly remember him except the shape of his

    1. How does the opening quote from a midsummer nights dream set the scene for the play that is to come? – The quote from the opening scene of A Midsummer Nights Dream starts off with a play suggesting that the tone could be much the same as the play ‘Away’. In a Midsummers Night’s Dream Puck comes off as a Trickster, as Tom plays Puck in the play this could be suggesting that something may just happen to Tom and he will come to obstacles through the play.…

Set in the Australian summer of 1967, Michael Gow’s Away is an elaborate play which explores the ideas of self- discovery and change. Through the war affected nation, three families, each from different social classes, depart on an iconic Australian holiday to the beach. In the play, Gow utilises the characters to demonstrate that going away physically is intrinsically linked to their mental developments. With the help of references to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer night’s Dream, Away uses Gwen and Coral to show the significant psychological changes made by the characters during holidays to the coast. Tom throughout the play acts as a catalyst for the change in other characters and is associated with Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.…

In Janette Turner Hospital’s short story Walking on Water, the exploration of the impact of relationships leads to the discovery of a person’s growth to be limited. All people have the strength to rise above adversity; however only some people chose to do so. People who do not have the strength to overcome adversity may surrender to the forces of life. Even though the role of adversity in one’s life is used to help shape an individual to help them become a better person, it can result in one’s inner conflict and one’s inability to overcome fear. “Walking on Water” by Janette Turner Hospital suggests that the role of adversity in shaping an individual’s identity is affected by the individual’s relationship with others resulting in the individual’s personal growth to be limited. Throughout the story the lesson learned is that James and Gillian’s (son and mother) relationship is unstable while James is conflicted with himself.…
