Loggerheads By Deneen Brown
1. The unifying title: “Chained Down”
There is a possibility that every person has their problems that chained them down. If they want to be freed from the chains that keep them down, all they need is the dedication to free themselves from their shackles. All three essays show the protagonist having issues with situations that pressure them.

“Loggerheads” appeared to be about animal cruelty until the end when you find out the friend's father had died from alcohol poisoning. With "Shooting an Elephant", it initially was about the author just complaining about the job he had at the time. By the end it's hard to feel bad for him given what the fact that he had to kill an elephant just so he could please an angry crowd. The last story, "Six Pack Abs at Age 74" had a very lighthearted start and didn't seem to fit in with the other stories until, however, you find out more about her …show more content…
The main connection that all the stories have is that the protagonists are dealing with pain, suffering, and death. They all discussed past events that they had to deal with and overcome. With "Loggerheads" the protagonist’s friend was dealing with his father dying from alcoholism, "Shooting and Elephant" was about the author watching the elephant slowly die, and "Six Pack..." was how Ernestine Sheperd dealt with her sister's passing.

6. The main ideas that come from these stories are that everyone deals with death differently and how they move on afterwards. The friend in "Loggerheads" was looking forward to a brighter future, in "Shooting an Elephant" he regretted killing the elephant, but moved on with his life, and with "Six Pack..." she held on to the promise she made with her sister to keep going with working out.

7. What about the text what you find something interesting?
“Six-Pack Abs at Age 74” by Deneen Brown. What attracted me to the essay is how an old lady can train and work hard for what she wants while still maintaining her

In the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen the theme is survival of the fittest. In Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen the book binds you to continue reading it until the very end. It like you are there with Brian and had a very descriptive image what it would look like standing next to him. “ A book is a magical thing that lets you travel to far-away places without leaving your chair” - Katrina Mayer. The plot of Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen is very interesting because of how you could imagine yourself right next to Brian like a seeing everything he sees.…

The novel "Jarhead," by Anthony Swafford is a first hand account of the Gulf War in early 1990. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very honest account of his experience, and while he wasn't actually in any combat situations, it was fascinating to see what life was like overseas.…

The book was banned by the State Board of Education in Texas in 2010 due to a simple mistake. A board member mixed up Martin with another author named Bill Martin who had written a book for adults titled "Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation."Seems that a very different Bill Martin – no Jr. and no children’s books to his name – wrote a very different kind of book, called Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation. The Texas Board of Education understandably felt, as Baggott notes, that there might be “compelling reason not to include Bill Martin’s Ethical Marxism on the curriculum list for elementary school children in Texas.” And then, just to be sure, they banned all of what they thought were Bill Martin’s other books. Like – you got it –…

“The Nobodies” is a short film that seems to follow the basic steps of John Truby’s The Anatomy of Story. Though the film follows these steps, I don’t think it’s a good story. Before Dusty and Greg ever meet each other, we recognize that they have the same desire in life. The have a longing to be loved, have attention, and to sing. Although Dusty is married, he still doesn’t feel like he is fully loved.…

In The Embers and the Stars by Kohák the intersection of time and eternity is expressed. Kohák has focused on "natural" time, which is to say that time is not just what is expressed by a clock, or with a series of numbers on a clock. "It is, rather, set within the matrix of nature's rhythm which establishes personal yet non-arbitrary reference points." This means that time is not measured in seconds, minutes, or hours but by personal existence and experience. These "reference points" are experiences in your life that are meaningful and you help spatially distinguish points in time. Time as we know it is explained by Kohák as a "construct imposed upon nature's rhythm, subordination and ordering it". He does say that it is a useful construct, but as for the theory of relativity time does not hold up.…

The poem “ If We Must Die” by Claude McKay is a response to Red Summer of 1919. The Red Summer is a series of race riots that took place in over thirty cities in the United States. In the poem the speaker is insisting that he and his comrades are being attacked and they know that they are not going to make it out alive. Since the speaker and his allies know that their demise is definite, they want to die fighting with honor and like men. Mckay uses a variety of literary forms when writing this poem.…
