MY FAVORITE ROOM
MY FAVORITE ROOM
My room is my favorite place. The floor of my room is a golden brown carpet. A beige rug covers a small portion of the floor next to my bed. In an array of gloss and semi-gloss, shades of off-white cover these four walls. Entire sections are hidden by nearly a dozen posters of comic book characters, girls, or athletes. Along the top section of my wall I have my eight-teen hats.

My room is about 10 feet by 10 feet so it is not too big or too small. I have a big window that is six and a half foot horizontally three feet vertically. When my window is looked out of one may view the front yard. I like having the window in the front a lot for two reasons one was so that when my friends come over kind of late they could knock on my window instead of ringing my door bell that way when they came if my dad was asleep they would not wake him up, he did not mind if they came over late just as long as his sleep was not disturbed. The other reason is that when my father comes home I am able to hear him so that way instead of coming home to find me watching television or talking on the telephone, which I was normally doing, he would come home to find me doing something constructive like reading a book or doing some homework which is the reason why I have my bed right by my window.

Next to my bed is the same alarm clock I have had since the sixth grade. It was a Christmas present from my little brother. It is an Emerson alarm clock with a cassette and compact disk player. On the other side of the room are three things which were very important to me, my tv, my stereo and my bathroom.

Every time I enter my room a feeling of lightheartedness comes over me. From the second I touch then twist that smooth brass doorknob to enter my room the negativity I face day to day is forgotten. In the winter my room is warm and cozy and in the summer my room is cool and comfortable. It is difficult for me to not want to lie in my bed upon entering my room when

Annie’s legs were getting crooked and couldn’t walk that much so she had to exercise. She really hated to do that. After a year and a half they haven’t even seen how the house looked. And Sini really wanted a tan. So Johan let them go out. He was going to pick them up around dinner. But then Dientje’s sister came and they couldn’t get in. Annie got real sick that day. A nice doctor came and helped them. The Germans came to inspect their house but Johan made a hiding place in the closet. The Germans caught one of their friends. Frances E.W. Harper (Judy Whipps) was a suffrage leader who represented the Negro Women. Harper was a lecturer and writer who opposed the idea of “only” white women have the right to vote. In 1891, Harper gave a speech to the National Council of women that called for equal rights to vote for African-American men and women. Harper stated in the speech that African-Americans were not dependent on the North and South but “members of the body politic who has a claim upon the nation for justice, simple justice.” Harper’s speech highlights some of the radical slurs and the divide between whites and Negros.…

The kitchen is decorated with polished wooden cabinets and a squeaky clean stove that shows your reflection when staring down upon it. There is also a fridge in the back of the kitchen and the trash bin resides next to the fridge. Touring the rest of the apartment there is my bedroom, my sister’s room and the master bedroom. My room suits all my needs; whether it be sleeping, eating, studying, or relaxing. My getaway place is my room. There are two twin beds in my room, and a closet full of shoes and clothes. A 50 inch television sits on top of the only black sleek dresser in the room. My room is usually where I invite all my friends over and throw parties. In my sister’s room there is a formal setup, just a simple king sized bed and a beige headstand where she keeps her television. In the hallway there is a treadmill where users can burn off calories and improve cardio. There are two bathrooms in the apartment, inside them are white walls and brown tiles in the tub. Also a mirror is above the sink to make sure people arrange themselves properly before exiting. The master bedroom hosts a bathroom, closet, and a desktop on top of a glass computer…

    Striking Worker

Obrero en huelga, asesinado “Striking Worker Assassinated” by Manuel Alvarez Bravo is a representation of war through politics. He captures the image of reality of what people don’t want to grasp and accept. Bravo’s picture represents everyone in Mexico and throughout the world who had to fight for their rights during the time period in which the time photo was taken. Bravo was risky with his choice to take modest photos to show the truth of what was happening, promoting awareness. I think a lot of people would think it is immoral to capture dark moments including death that is so dramatic such as this photograph. I also agree believing that isn’t moral to capture the essence of a soulless body. Although Bravo had no intentions to demoralise but rather to make a statement about war some might not agree with his statement. It is hard for me to find a mutual ground on how I feel about photos similar to this one. For one, I find it disrespectful on a personal level to expose the worker in his condition of his death and allow it to become art. On the other hand I respect the artist for promoting awareness about the situation and allowing it to be recognized all over. I think making people and victims their subject in art and expression isn’t the right way to address what is really going on in the world. Especially those which travel the world in search of dark photos such as this to not make the political statement but simply for the money and recognition. Given this wasn’t Bravo’s intentions, but there are still those out there to do such things. If we look back at Mills Utilitarian’s outlook on pursuing happiness one might say that Bravo did not hurt anyone in promoting the awareness through his art assuming the worker either had no family member or that they had accepted Bravo’s intentions. In the end, I still find myself stuck in the middle of how I feel towards photography to create statements. In the end there is no beauty in art according to Tolstoy but rather…

As I sit here staring at these whites walls, I find it very easy to ponder with my artistic thoughts. They look as though they are waiting to be filled with memories and creative ideas. The strangely arranged area shows the unique, fun, and creative personalities of the beings that live in this enclosed room; it’s almost as if a burst of happiness blew up in here the night before today. Ryan Sheckler, taking up one large portion of the wall is extremely inviting and dreamy to look at, I gaze into his eyes every time I look up and ponder.…

Walking down the stairs, turning the corner, I enter my room. As I open the door, I immediately feel the soft carpet, I am enveloped in the familiar surroundings. The two colored walls, the shelves that hold my books and various trinkets, and my bed with its headboard holding an assortment of items. Sitting on the downy soft comforter, I smell a faint whiff of sweet pea that is constantly in the air. While I sit I listen to the quiet music that is always playing in the background. All the while thinking of contentment.…

Sullivan, Zero from Nightmare Before Christmas, Stitch from Lilo and Stitch, Mushu and Cricket from Mulan, and Au Naturel from the Minion Movie). Next to my window is my collage of pictures. I have 3 short silver wires and each holds 4 bright pictures; below those, I have a wood frame that has a picture of me and my childhood friends; and my last picture on that wall is my "Alice Down the Rabbit Hole", it is another and different interpretation of the story. Now on to my right wall, this wall is a little different than the rest. My twin sized bed is on the floor right up against the wall, but the wall itself slants inward, right over my bed. My blanket on my bed is an orange quilt that has an old purple floral design on it. It has a retro look. At the foot of my bed, is a short, white foot dresser that my great-grandfather built my mother. On that is where my black Dell computer and my white Google Chrome charge (those lay side by side), next to those is where I keep my large and colorful Biology binder. On top of that stands my Pocket People that I got when I traveled to New…

In the short story “My Parent’s Bedroom” by Uwem Akpan, the country of Rwanda is having a civil war between the Hutus and Tutsis, the primary trying to eradicate the latter. The Hutus force Papa to kill Maman, which she convinces him that it was only solution. However, it wasn’t the best choice in his family’s situation. The Wizard and the Hutus arrive to ensure that Papa slays his Tutsi spouse, Maman. Papa murders her to please the crowd, “If you let any Tutsi live, you’re dead. And then they begin to leave, some patting him on the back,” (27). I find this to be the only major decision made in the story because it severs the whole family’s connection with one another, and especially leaves Monique traumatized. There were few consequences,…

In addition to it, on a table against a wall placed cupcakes and candies which make the ground floor smells warm and inviting and blessedly familiar. There is a pool table on one side of the lounge and a table tennis table on the other side beside couches. In the middle are three elevators and from across is a wall of mailboxes. It would take approximately a minute to get to the floor that I live in, the 20th floor. Step out of the elevator after the sound “ding”, the carpeted floor gives it a wonderfully homely character. My room is a double split room, it is allocated evenly on both sides and is furnitured with essentials such as closet, table and mattress on the base. As I jump on the bed, the bed-springs does not creak and the mattress is very soft to lay on. When open up the window, the sound of the city mixed with the sound of wind can be heard clearly along with the sunset and city view outside my window is quite a sight to behold. The throw pillow in bright global textiles and the traditional patterned bedding that I brought all the way from my own country, China, lightened this little room. All these small parts all take parts to build up a home feeling which is one of the main reasons why Lawrinson Hall is my favorite building on campus.…

    My Messy Room

I am currently sitting in my bedroom, on a cold winter day. My feet touching the rough surface of my ancient Persian carpet, walls of orangey orange stare at me through the pictures on them, and the mountains of dirty clothes falling over me as if there was an avalanche going on. Today is not going well as I feel stressed from all the chores that I have, plus the cleaning of my over infected room. Even though every visitor that gets to see my room may suffer blindness from seeing the mess, I love this room because it has a certain warmth and glow that allows my mind to rest in peaceful bliss. Yes, maybe there is a smell of wet dog and there are pets that I never brought home crawling around every corner of this room but it is the place where I grew up and feel safe to be when I am down. There are so many great treasures hidden in this room that as soon as I clean, I feel water drops fall from my dark brown eyes and run across my cheeks until they fall from my chin and hit the floor. Out of a 24 hour day I may only take 7 hours to get this place spotless and be able to observe the wonders hidden inside of the black door that covers the entrance.…
