Way back in 2010, a small TV show came onto the BBC, a show that brought the character of Sherlock Holmes back onto the small screen once again. My favourite TV character resides in this show, however he didn’t appear until the finale of ‘Sherlock’ Series one. Although only appearing for ten minutes at the end of the final episode of Series One, the character of Jim Moriarty fascinated me quite and automatically became my favourite TV character. In Series Two of ‘Sherlock’, the character of Moriarty took more of a main role position. He was already established as the villain and he had made a powerful first impression in his first episode but now he has become central to what ‘Sherlock’ has become as a TV show and all the better for it. Moriarty has a brilliant mindset which is fantastic to watch, he knows what he is doing and why he is doing the things he does, everything is for a purpose. Even if the audience is not in on the loop, his intentions are ultimately revealed at the end and even then you don’t know if his game is finally over.
Jim Moriarty has a complex personality, which myself personally, can relate to (whether this is a good or bad thing is undecided!). He is guarded yet eccentric; he is mysterious and yet completely over the top in his actions; he is sarcastic and also blunt; and he is frightening but also in his own way, kind and calm. This character spoke out to me in a lot of ways, helping me to deal with my own conflicting issues and placing a label on them almost so that I could identify where I was at in my own personal head-space.
His motivations are simple: Have fun; and challenge Sherlock. And he does. Everything he does revolve around getting a ‘one-up’ over Sherlock Holmes and when it gets to the cliff-hanger of Series Two, you realise that he has succeeded; for once the villain has triumphed over the hero. His quotes are
