Songs have taken over the spot of poems in literature. Songs can be considered poetic because of what the writer does to portray their message. In the poem “My Happiness is..” many poetic devices are used to make it artistic. This is relevant in the song “Everything” as well. The authors for each of these works use similar literary techniques whilst still being very different. A rhyme scheme is used in the song and poem. End rhyme is used in the song and internal rhyme is used in the poem. Rhyme helps to create a flow that makes both the song and poem. Society does not take the time to sit down and read a poem. Listening to it to poetry in a musical form keeps the artfulness alive. In the article “What Use Is Poetry?’ states "’Poetry will be relevant for as long as humans need a way to express their thoughts and emotions’" (Kessler). Poetry is an expression of emotions that other often connect to and use to communicate feelings whether they are good or bad. Humans want to voice the feelings that are difficult to explain. Poems can use things such as figurative language to help display these feelings to others in a comparison that is relatable. Songs have a very similar method to present a frame of mind. The poem “My Happiness is..” lacks some of the poetic devices that the song “Everything” includes. The use of similes or metaphors was missed in the poem. In the song the speaker states “You're a falling star, you're the getaway car / You're the line in the sand when I go too far / You're the swimming pool on an August day” (BUBLE lines 1-3). Buble compares his girlfriend to things that feel good, create a sense of safety, and can help in times of need. Jumping into nice, cool water on a hot day is refreshing and needed to keep from overheating. She is his safety net for when things get a little too much. She can save him from drowning in modern society where things can be very overwhelming. She is a person who is very close and dear to the speaker. He can count on his partner to keep his life exhilarating yet out of danger. She is the shooting that he can wish on. She is rare and perfect for the situation that he is currently going through. The poem is built through live experiences. The audience may not be able to connect as easily to these specific events. In the poem the author writes “My wedding ring, this makes my heart sing, / A chocolate bar, when I feel under par” (Northover lines 10-11). Not everyone who experiences love in a relationship is married. Although they still may be able to relate to certain lines of the poem, it might not be all of them.
