My Interest In Reading Intervention
My interest in reading intervention began early in my career when I was trained as a Reading Recovery teacher for FWISD. This program planted the seed that grew into a keen understanding that students were reading as well as they knew how to, that they would not become more proficient readers accidently, but rather through intentional, systematic teaching. Thus my dedication for teaching students to read, how to read better, and how to better understand what they have read to become more confident and capable readers.

That seed was further nourished as I was introduced to dyslexia programming through a colleague who was pursuing her CALT certification with Scottish Rite. Our co-teaching, and the conversations we had about our experience

    My example for the Reading Literacy objective is reading the novel, Invisible Man. Throughout the journey of reading Invisible Man we’ve done pre-reading, reading, and post-reading activities and applied strategies from all three activities to other assignments.     Kimberly is a sweet and hardworking student. She is very enthusiastic about reading and love fairytale books. Kimberly struggles with reading from the beginning of the year. The area of phonics specifically had been the hardest part of the reading process for her.     Olsen. My reading level slowly got better and better. By third grade I was still pulled out of the classroom but instead of just being Mrs. Olsen and me, there were also other kids that struggled with reading too. In the beginning of fourth grade, I was tested to see if I would go back into reading recovery again. I passed the test with reading levels above my grade so I graduated from reading recovery. Mrs. Olsen changed my life because now I love to read and before reading used to make me hate having to go to school. I never thought anyone would be able to make that big of an impact on my life but she did. That made me want to become a teacher and make a difference in someone life like she made in mine. A problem today is that there are tons of students that don’t have the extra help or teachers that are willing to do everything in their power to make that difference for the student. I would like to help solve this problem by becoming a teacher and give my students everything I can to help them and hopefully make a different like Mrs. Olsen made.
