A Mother’s Bad Dream
As a mother nothing is harder to watch than your child grow up to become an independent individual. As shown in the poem “To a Daughter Leaving Home” by Linda Pastan no matter how old your daughter turns as a mother you will always worry about the choices your child will make and the people that will hurt her throughout life. This poem also show no matter how much you may want to hold on to your little girl you always have to let go and allow them to survive for themselves and hope and pray for the best. From the nine months of barring and the 18years of emotional break downs and heart breaks it is common for a mother to become attach to her daughter and not want her to leave and go out into the real world. In the poem “To a Daughter Leaving Home” the author speaks to all young female women leaving home form their mother which is clear in the title. She starts off the poem when her daughter was only eight learning to ride a bike without training wheels. It is hard for the mother to let go because her fear of letting her child hurt herself “loping along beside you as you wobbled away”(lines3-5 Panstan) but eventually letting go because she knows she will not be there to hold her hand every step of the way. Even though the mother wants her daughter to remain the little girl she taught how to ride a bike she still has to age. No matter how much you monitor your child or hold their hand eventually by way of life they will have to grow on with their life “sprinted to catch up, while you grew smaller, more breakable with distance”. (Lines14-16). The mother strong guard of her child makes it seem as the further she is from home the more likely something bad will happen to her increasing the mother’s fear of something terrible happing to her baby girl. This poem is dedicated to every mother who gives birth or raise a daughter of their own no matter how hard it maybe eventually every mother will have to let their daughter go and live own her

Just as she found it extremely difficult accepting the fact of her once young boy, growing up into the mature young man he was becoming, she found it hard to cope with the idea of her daughter not being as dependent anymore. In Olds’ forth poem, “First Thanksgiving”, Reminiscing back to the diaper days, she draws memories of her once young daughter, “those nights, I fed her to sleep, week after week, the moon rising and setting, and waxing- whirling, over the months, in a slow blur, around our planet” (10-13). Thinking back to these times, taking care of her daughter, nurturing her, shows there was no similar effect as to her way of being raised, on her daughter. Just as her relationship was strong and compassionate with her son, Olds’ treasured the time she had with her daughter and valued everything that has come into her life at this time. No matter what challenges individuals face in life, the path they choose to take, as an adult can be completely the opposite as to what they knew, as Sharon proceed to…

“Adam and Eve” by Ani Difranco and “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid are two literary works that speak to the issue of how important it is to have a mother in a daughter’s life. It is the life experience(s) that can only be communicated to a daughter by her mother. The emotions, feeling and understanding of the female experience of what a woman goes through in life. When a young lady does not receive this information for the female prospective is the difference between socialites view and becoming of a “bad” or “good” girl. It is critical to have a mother in the life of a daughter to provide emotional balance, feeling and understanding from a woman’s point of view.…

The central idea in this story seems to be the mother’s search of an understanding of her daughter’s personality and outlook on life. The majority of the story is the mother trying to depict reasons for why her daughter is the way she is, so delicate, reserved, needless, and even unhappy at times. She seems to also defend her parenting choices by making excuses or blaming the urges of others in order to not have all the blame on her. She speaks about how she had no other option but to put her in the care of someone else at the age of two, even though she knew the teacher was “evil” (Pg. 925). “It was the only place there was…the only way I could hold a job” (pg. 925).…

I have read excerpts from two texts. An informational text titled ‘The Sea Around Us’ by Rachel Carson, and a literature text titled ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’, by Jules Verne. In both excerpts there are many descriptions of the ocean. Many people debate whether details are described more vividly in informational text, or in literature. I feel the ocean was described more vividly in the excerpt from the literature text ‘Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea’.…

These words from that poem made me understand that a mother never forgets about her son and that she would never show how she is worrying about him to others. After I read this poem, I remembered how my mother was worrying about me when I went to other countries alone for a long time; but, at the same time I was the one who she has showed those feelings. Before I read this poem, I had never thought about how my mother is worrying about me some times. But I think I still can’t understand all that she feels.…

The parent describes the concrete path she is riding her bike down as windy and dangerous. The path is meant to symbolize her life and the curves symbolize the fun and dangerous adventures that life holds. The farther away the daughter gets from the parent on the path symbolizes the daughter maturing and growing apart from the parent. She doesn't need their support as much as she is fully capable of riding the bicycle on her own. Once the daughter gets too far away, the parent begins to sprint after the daughter because they believe she is too fragile. Pastan uses a simile to describe the daughter’s hair in wind as if it were waving like a handkerchief. Symbolizing the daughter waving goodbye to her parent as she leaves home. Through these images, the reader can infer that the theme of the poem is about growing and gaining…
