My Pursuit Of Perfectionism
Here’s the thing about me and perfectionism, I can’t control it. When something doesn’t meet my “high expectations,” I would do anything in my power to fix it. This can be considered a good reason why perfectionism is a good quality to have because of your determination. Not only that, I would always strive to do my best. Also when put under pressure, I can perform extremely well. I also had people tell me that I always seem …show more content…
One experience that relates to this was when I became the pianist at my church. Ever since I started playing the piano, many people at my church wanted me to become the next pianist because the current one was extremely old, and wasn’t expected to live much longer. So when they asked me to play for them, it didn’t come as a surprise. What did freak me out was that I was needed to play in 10 minuets. But that wasn’t the only thing that made me nervous, it was also the fact that they chose the eight songs, that I’ve never seen before. So, as a perfectionist, I immediately started memorizing the songs like a mad man. Before I knew it, my 10 minuets flew by and I felt the hands of my mother pushing me towards the piano. When I sat down on the bench, I felt my hands become clammy and butterflies flutter in my stomach. My fingers twitched with anxiety as I placed them down gently on the slightly yellowed keyboard. I took a deep breath and started playing. Time slowly passed, until I finally reached the end of my performance. When I stood up to go back to my seat, I looked out into the crowd and saw the proud faces of my parents. I walked quietly to my seat with a huge smile knowing that I did

The audition alone was very much like being thrust into a new world. I mean, I hadn’t even known what a flute looked like before he had pulled one out. Yes, I was that new to music. Luckily enough for me, I caught the hang of how to blow air correctly as soon as the teacher showed me how. I felt proud, though still a little apprehensive about the warning he’d given me about having to work twice as hard to catch up to the others.…

Have you ever tried to be so perfect at something and it ended up going all wrong? I have. In the essay “So What’s So Bad About Being So-So?” by Lisa Wilson Strick (205-207) she makes the point that being perfect doesn’t always turn out the way you hope. I completely concur with her. Perfection can often be a wonderful thing, but for me, perfection caused me to have a very low confidence and so it became a vice in my life.…

In a positive form, perfectionism can provide the driving energy which leads to great achievement. The meticulous attention to detail necessary for scientific investigation, the commitment which pushes composers to keep working until the music realises the glorious sounds playing in the imagination, and the persistence which keeps great artists at their easels until their creation matches their conception all result from perfectionism. Setting high standards is not in itself a bad thing. However, perfectionism combined with a punishing attitude towards one's own efforts can cripple the imagination, kill the spirit, and so handicap performance that an individual may never fulfil the promise of early talent. ENDING…

Being a musician and being a perfectionist are probably the two worst combinations, and luckily I am both. When I am in the studio making a new track, I spend too much time thinking about what I don’t like and not on what I should be actually doing to fix it. We all dwell on the negative thoughts, but that same determination in the negative thinking could, “easily be turned around to become a force that actually nurtures the seed of success” (Chu 128). Negative thinking can take a lot of precious energy that could be better spent elsewhere. In all the time I’ve spent thinking about what I don’t like, I probably could have made that song better and even finished another song as well. On the other hand, positive thinking does not guarantee a successful life. We shouldn’t try to change our own personal opinions of ourselves, and by doing so we are able to free ourselves from the idea that “change comes before success”. The most important thing to remember is that our negativity does not have as much power as our imagination thinks it does.…
