Why I Pursuit Of Perfection?
When I was a teenager I really thought that the world revolved around my ability to catch a twirling rifle. This was the thought that haunted me day and night for four years of my life. I would get to school earlier than most so I could practice tossing my rifle before classes started and I would stay later than most in the hopes of being the best with my rifle when compared to the other forty-nine color guard girls. I practiced more than most of the girls on the team but I was still not the best. I wanted to be able to execute each rifle routine perfectly every time I was asked. Perfection: this is what I sought. Perfection is what most people hope to achieve throughout their lives in one way or another. As people, we seek to have perfect lives, perfect careers, and perfect happiness. The pursuit of that perfection is what drives our lives. I was not a happier or better person when I was in the color guard. I was consumed with a need to be flawless. The need to be flawless is the only reason I stayed in the color guard for so long. The hours were miserable, we were yelled at often, and each girl in the color guard hated the others. Motivation to remain a part of such an organization was lacking incredibly, yet I stayed. As a person I felt a strong drive, a …show more content…
This was something that inconsistently disrupted the expectations I held for my high school life. Never knowing when I would be forced to run laps or when I would be allowed to leave when the majority of the guard did was what pushed me to be perfect. Looking back, I wonder if the reason I pushed for perfection wasn’t so that I was the best, but so that I could obtain some amount of consistency in my life and meet the expectations I held for what my high school years were supposed to be like. In its own way, my pursuit of perfection might have simply been a need for consistency in

In high school, I was involved multiple clubs and groups varying from athletic, academic, and artistic. Overall, the school’s marching band color guard had the largest influence on my personal growth in during the time. At my school, all color guard members are required to complete one season of marching and playing instruments with the band before being allowed to join the guard. Therefore, it wasn’t until my sophomore year that I auditioned and was accepted into the color guard which I participated in for the rest of my high school career. Because there was no recognized team captain, all the girls were expected to step up as leaders not only for themselves but for everyone else as well.…

What does the word perfect mean? Well, according to the Webster Dictionary, it means “being entirely without fault or defect” and/or “corresponding to an ideal standard or abstract concept.” Many people strive to be perfect. Whether it is the perfect hair, the perfect group of friends, or the perfect body; people strive for a perfect life. But is a perfect life an achievable thing? Everyone has a different idea of perfection, therefore; it is impossible to find one that we can all agree on. But the media sure does give everyone an idea of what perfection really looks like. Women must be skinny with smooth skin and men have to be muscular with great hair. “These cultural messages feed the deepest insecurity in ourselves and encourage us to…

Perfection is the ultimate human desire- to be without flaw and to be the most ideal to survive through the world’s expectations and humanity’s role in civilization. Modern society upholds and promotes the idea of materialistic wealth, power, and social status as the ultimate goal to achieve in life, and that one would not be truly happy unless they accumulate all of these, yet a member of royalty who had married into such opulence and glamour like Diana, Princess of Wales who lived a life that “ended up being far from a fairy tale” as “her struggles culminated with her marriage to Prince Charles crumbling in the 1990s and her death in 1997” would say otherwise (Greenman). Society is so entrenched into imprinting these contradicting messages…

Once I left junior high and began high school, I decided to try something new, other than dance, so I joined color guard. That may have been the best choice I had ever made. I found myself in this activity. In my first year of color guard, I grew up a lot. Color guard was way more time consuming. I almost did not have enough time to do any other activity, but I managed. I managed to balance color guard, a full schedule of high school classes and on top of that, college classes. Because of this, I learned how to be a reliable person.…

Have you ever tried to be so perfect at something and it ended up going all wrong? I have. In the essay “So What’s So Bad About Being So-So?” by Lisa Wilson Strick (205-207) she makes the point that being perfect doesn’t always turn out the way you hope. I completely concur with her. Perfection can often be a wonderful thing, but for me, perfection caused me to have a very low confidence and so it became a vice in my life.…

I want to be in a leadership position because I have a real passion for guard and I want to help my fellow guardies and be a positive role model to them and inspire them. I want to contribute everything I have to offer to this program. To me, extra practices, time spent to help others learn the choreography, helping with equipment, and many other things a leader is chosen to do, is not a work, but a privilege. These tasks would not bother or frustrate me, because as long as it’d help my peers, I’d be happy to do anything to help. I’d handle all obstacles, whether they concern individuals, the team, a routine, or equipment, in an effective way that would help the team grow. Even though I’m fairly new at color guard, my enthusiasm and…

One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…

Becoming apart of The Blue Guards drill team was a huge accomplishment in my high school career because I learned how to be a part of a team and work with other people to achieve a happy and positive environment. While being on the drill team I was able to travel to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete with other schools all over the nation. We competed with the best of the best and came in 3rd place out of 60 other schools.…

On the other hand trying to arrive at moral perfection is a worthwhile goal because you are putting forth the effort to accomplish what you want done. To try your best at your morals is an achievement itself because you want the best for what you are looking to achieve. But like I said earlier to have moral perfection is not always going to happen. Someone wanting to arrive at moral perfection would be a person wanting to be successful in the qualities they are wanting to improve. A quality Benjamin Franklin wrote was silence. A quality I wrote down was quiet. These compare because we both agreed that by being silent you will learn from others mistakes and it will be beneficial to you in the long run. Do not try to have every moral perfected because you learn more from mistakes, but arrive at moral perfection so you work hard towards the goal knowing you are only human and cannot help not to be perfect.…

Perfection. It's more than just a universal truth. We believe in it. We crave it. We strive for it. It’s safe to say we basically breathe for it. But tell me, what is perfection? Each and every individual asked that question would have a greatly altered definition of their perception of perfection, ranging from personal appearance to success. It is a mere fact that depending on who you are, where you grew up, and what you're capable of, you are presented with different expectations on how you should live your life. You will always be expected to be the very best; to be perfect. It is quite understandable, even from an average person’s perspective, that along with being a well-known individual, certain expectations from the general public exist.…

Many people believe that being called a perfectionist is a compliment and something to aim for. But from my own experience of living with a family of perfectionists, I can tell you right now that it's not as glorious as it seems. A study published in the Psychological Bulletin shows that since 1989 there has been a 59% increase in the number of perfectionists which is why it's important to talk about this issue. Perfection is something we all desire but it's also something we can never have. Joseph Hall said, "Perfection is the child of time" We can all follow the path to perfection but what we need to realise is that it's not a destination.…
