Being A Perfectionist
Many people believe that being called a perfectionist is a compliment and something to aim for. But from my own experience of living with a family of perfectionists, I can tell you right now that it's not as glorious as it seems. A study published in the Psychological Bulletin shows that since 1989 there has been a 59% increase in the number of perfectionists which is why it's important to talk about this issue. Perfection is something we all desire but it's also something we can never have. Joseph Hall said, "Perfection is the child of time" We can all follow the path to perfection but what we need to realise is that it's not a destination. You may be convinced that being a perfectionist is the road to success but realistically, it's a life full of disappointment. Another misconception is that perfectionists are always organised, but as weird as it sounds, it's actually a big waste of time. My dad is a perfect example. No matter what task he does, he puts in 110% which means he ends up spending 10 times longer to finish things like washing the dishes. When he writes a note or fills in a document, he will always force me to get him a ruler. Why? So …show more content…
What I found is that I couldn't cope with being bad at something, so I hated failing. I used to play soccer, and on my team, we always did 1 v 1's. I hated it so much because I sucked at it. I placed so much pressure on myself thinking that if the coach saw me lose he would think I’m burden. He even told me to stop worrying but I didn't want to admit to myself that I was bad at something. So, I would just never try which is ridiculous now that I think about it. After a while I realised that failure is one of those things where whether you like it or not you have to accept it in order to grow. Ellen DeGeneres said, "It's failure that gives you the proper perspective on

Have you ever tried to be so perfect at something and it ended up going all wrong? I have. In the essay “So What’s So Bad About Being So-So?” by Lisa Wilson Strick (205-207) she makes the point that being perfect doesn’t always turn out the way you hope. I completely concur with her. Perfection can often be a wonderful thing, but for me, perfection caused me to have a very low confidence and so it became a vice in my life.…

As shown in "The Author to Her Book" by Anne Bradstreet, perfectionism is not a new phenomenon. Bradstreet uses diction, imagery, and tone to display her insecurities about, and dislike of, her own work, resulting from the human imperfections that have created an inadequate piece of literature.…

The question of failure is, in fact, a success in itself. I frame my life knowing that every obstruction and challenge faced is just a lesson waiting to be learned. The circumstances that genuinely made me believe this philosophy happened when I began working at Chick-Fil-A. Starting my work at the offset of 16 I promised myself that I was going to prove to the management that I was going to progress to become one of the best. Throughout the years of working there I upheld my promise and worked my way up to become a Team Leader. The youngest Team leader ever to work at that Chick-Fil-A.…

In a positive form, perfectionism can provide the driving energy which leads to great achievement. The meticulous attention to detail necessary for scientific investigation, the commitment which pushes composers to keep working until the music realises the glorious sounds playing in the imagination, and the persistence which keeps great artists at their easels until their creation matches their conception all result from perfectionism. Setting high standards is not in itself a bad thing. However, perfectionism combined with a punishing attitude towards one's own efforts can cripple the imagination, kill the spirit, and so handicap performance that an individual may never fulfil the promise of early talent. ENDING…

Gymnastics is a different and interesting sport. Most sports have one thing to focus on. In Gymnastics, there are four events to focus on: the vault, bars, beam and floor. Your hands get ripped, you get sore, you can tear, break, and sprain many parts of your body during practice.. Even when you hurt yourself, you have to get back up and keep going to succeed. Gymnastics is harder than other sports because you have a lot of conditioning, you don’t wear any protective gear, and you have to be hard worker.…

My experience with failure came with athletics. For my whole life I have always been involved in sports like soccer, tennis, basketball. When I was in the fourth grade I joined a swim team and that was the first and really only sport that I stuck with; swimming came naturally to me, and it was something that I could do year round and I loved every minute of it. However, once I was in high school I stopped swimming and joined my high school’s cross country team. My dad was a runner all throughout high school so I thought it would be a good idea to give the sport my father loved a chance. The cross country team allowed me to grow, and I learned things about myself including that fact that I can’t run. It’s not that I can’t physically run, I have…

Perfectionism, in psychology, is a belief that perfection can and should be attained. In its pathological form, perfectionism is a belief that work or output which is anything less than perfect is unacceptable. At such levels, this is considered an unhealthy belief, and psychologists typically refer to such individuals as maladaptive perfectionists thus perfection is not normal. People like perfectionism because it is excellence and those like Gatsby strive for that eventhough it is impossible to get like when Gatsby describes his car as , a rich cream colour, with bright nickel, monstrous length, with triumphant hat boxes (page 51). The whole American Dream is based on idealism. Perfect things dont exist in the world: for instance, walls are not fully straight, and apples are never fully round. The Great Gatsby is a very good example of how perfection is not useful; just harmful. Gatsby wouldve been better off living his life which was near perfection because he almost had everything, there only was one imperfection: he did not possess Daisy. Perfect is too good to be true.…

Everyday people strive for perfection, but the truth is that no one will ever achieve it. Within every task, challenge or achievement, failure is present. Most fear the possibility of failure because weaknesses are brought out and people feel vulnerable. On the other hand I witnessed a learning aspect from failure, and have a new understanding of it. Varsity football was where I faced a large amount of failure, but in turn learned many lessons.…

But as most perfectionists know to their cost, there is a down side to setting your standards so high. I speak from my own experience, but I also recognize a lot of my clients have this quality, and suffer from it. Perfectionists fear failure, and are intolerant of their own shortcomings, as well as any less than perfect performances by their teams. Paradoxically they also fear success, as the effort they have to put into achieving success can…

For some people it takes forever to figure out that failure is not always a bad thing, while at the time it may seem like the end of the world. “We are all potentially capable of any human act.” (Roth 39). Even the most successful of people have failed at something at least once in their lives. Maybe consider though, that failure was what brought them back up to the best, hardest working person that they could be and it did not take long for them to retrieve what they had lost and made it ten times better!…
