I think every child can learn how to read and wright. There will always be some students that struggle more than other and with those student we have to come up with strategies that best suits the student to help them learn how to read. The first thing I would do is create a welcoming environment for my students. Creating a welcoming environment will allow student to feel safe in providing input, asking questions and make mistakes. One of the first things I would do is have my students do a reading inventory. Having my students do this, I will get an idea of what kinds of book my students like to read and know who does and does not like to read.
To be effective in teaching reading I think the teacher should be motivated. The teacher …show more content…
should show excitement in teaching reading and the students should be able to see it. The teacher should find fun way to engage students in reading. Such as with games, Readers Theater, and buddy reading. The teacher should be able to motivate the student to read. Some way I would motivate my students to read are:
• I will have a classroom library filled with books that my students are interested in reading. I would get ideas on what books to get by using the reading interest inventory my student had done at the beginning of the year.
• I would have D.E.A.R. time each day where my students will be able to read independently. At this time I would model reading to my student by also reading a book.
• I would allow student to visit the library.
• I would also model reading by reading a book out load to the class.
Making sure the book I select is a book my students are interested in.
• Allow the students to read from various sources such as magazines, newspapers, and internet sites.
Another thing I will keep in mind to be an effective reading teacher will be those struggling reader and ELL student. Some of the accommodations I will have is I will differentiate instructions. I will give them books to read at their reading level and have audio books available. I will have word walls around my classrooms with frequency words on them. I will set time aside to have guided reading with them. I will find strategies that will help the student out in learning how to read. An effective reading teacher should have a welcoming environment, be motivated, encourage students to read, and keep in mind the struggling readers. I understand that not every one learns the same and not one single strategy works for everyone. I know every student is capable of learning how to read but some students struggle more than others. As a teacher I will provide differentiate instructions to those that struggle but will engage and challenge all students in constructing new
knowledge.
