My Role In Creating A Caring Culture
As a caregiver myself I believe that relationships and efficiency go hand in hand. The partners I work with on a routine biases help feed my energy and shape my attitude. If negative thoughts surround our relationships on the unit I find it difficult to contribute to a caring culture. On the other hand, if positive energy floods the floor I notice my passion for caring and efficiency flourish. When my unit practices together with love and compassion we are able to practice efficiently without compromising loving care. If hospital leaders are able to recognize the chain reaction of satisfied dignified partners, I believe that their commitment to love as a foundation would thrive. By recognizing the power that loving relationships create, hospitals as well as individualized units can begin to see the benefits that a caring culture carries. …show more content…

A caring culture cannot be accomplished without the commitment of each and every partner including leaders. With dedication units can be successful in creating their own series of small systems that harvest the caring community needed to create a caring culture. My role in creating a caring culture is to do all things with love. I vow to not feed into the negative mind sets that can develop in a broken bureaucracy. Through utilizing the work of Dr. Aaron Beck’s, cognitive therapy, I will challenge others to rethink their thoughts in order to allow change to happen.     Most hospitals have pastoral care that is available to patients while they are in the hospital. If patients do not want to be seen by hospital pastoral care, they should be encouraged to be visited their own spiritual leader, depending on what their religious beliefs are. Dunn (2010) uses the term healing environment to describe the environment that the hospital staff works in. She suggests that good deeds such as, staff going out of their way to assist patients or family members, positive comments, and anything else that goes above and beyond job descriptions, should be recognized and posted where everyone can see it (Dunn, 2010). At the hospital where this author works, most of the units in the hospital have boards where good deeds are displayed. There are also boxes that patients and families can put cards in to recognize a staff member of their choice. Unit directors also go around and survey patients about their stay and the care that they are receiving. Patients can take the opportunity to recognize extraordinary staff members at that time also.     I agree with Kaiser’s view of caring and curing complement each other through the focus in health promotion. This organization uses resources into curing the disease, but also uses in promoting health and preventing recurrence. The aspect of caring through health promotion is what makes this hospital different from other organizations.     The components of a healing environment include three important elements. The first is a healing physical environment, which encompasses not only how to care for the patient, but to care for their families, caregivers and also the members of staff (Eberst, 2008). A healing environment should focus on reducing noise levels as well as fewer night time interruptions of sleep, this is known to promote rest and healing.     Usually staff development plans are made by the leadership staff to enable employees to understand their jobs, provide them incentive for growth within the company, and guide them into the right direction when situations occur that may be problematic.     Caregivers place the patient’s needs ahead of their own needs hence are more prone to distress (Chase, 2005). General symptoms affect physical, psychological/emotional, behavioral, professional, and spiritual functions (Aycock & Boyle, 2009). Compassion fatigue is reflected by weakness, dizziness, fatigue, and hypertension. Frequent head, back, and muscle aches persist with rapid pulse and gastrointestinal complaints. The reduced resistance to infections led to frequent illnesses and sleep deprivation (Boyle, 2011). The manifestations of psychological emotions include a sense of apathy, frustration, boredom, depression, and hopelessness with a sense of low personal accomplishment, poor concentration, isolation, irritation, and anxiety. There is a tendency of avoiding intense patient situations with criticism and depersonalizing patients (Aycock & Boyle, 2009). Sarcasm, cynicism, absenteeism, and stereotyped communications are the symptoms affecting behavior. There is a paramount tendency for abuse of chemicals and self medication. Spiritually withdraw from fellowship and project poor judgment towards existential issues. There is lack of interest in introspection and doubt value systems or beliefs drawing conclusions that a major change is necessary.
