CYCLING THROUGH VIETNAM
In summer vacations, students usually come back home, study…but for me, I had a meaningful journey, it was “CYCLING THROUGH VIETNAM”.
We are members of the green summer club, 80 people, 80 characters, but having the same ideal, this is discovering the country. Therefore, we took part in this journey and theme of the journey was “The Youth with Traffic Safety & Environmental Protection”.
Before beginning, we had a careful preparation to get enough health to take part in this journey. We did exercises every afternoon, the actual trip to help difficult situation…
We started at Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (Ha Noi Capital) throughout 24 provinces along Viet Nam, to Phu Quoc Island for 36 days. This was a long and difficult trip.
A journey was long 2400 kilometers, divided into 3 main periods. The first was from Ha Noi Capital to Hue City. We had many difficulties, specially the weather. It was very hot, temperature even was up to 38°C. As you know, we went along 1A Highway. It was so dangerous, because there were many transports, and a little accident happened. The average distance was 100 kilometers per day and the longest was 170 kilometers (do you know, at that time, we were cycling until 11p.m?).
This was really a difficult period. The next period was from Hue City to Ho Chi Minh City. This period had many challenges. The wind and the topography were trials. From Hue City to Da Nang City, we had to conquer The Hai Van Pass – the longest Pass of Viet Nam and the most difficult of the journey also. These were also many different slopes and Passes such as: Ca Pass, Cu Mong Pass… The wind was the next obstacle in this period, especially in Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan. Strong winds made cycling time became longer so people felt more

The time scale is pretty impressive as Santoli has looked at men who were there right from the start in the military advisers phase, around 1962, to those who were present at the end in the mid-70s when America made final attempts to extricate itself from Indo China. Those of us in the United States have the luxury of visiting our relatives across the world. We get all caught up in our pleasures of vacationing, that we fail to see things from the perspectives of others. For relatives wanting to travel to different countries, saving enough money is no easy task. In the wake of the Vietnam war, economic hardship runs rampant in communities with run-down neighborhoods and disheveled street beggars. My Vietnamese cousin, Thai Minh, doesn't let these difficulties deter him from traveling. Minh travels not only to search for job offers, but also to escape the sensation of feeling trapped inside his war-torn nation. Minh uses traveling to attain a worldview not limited to a single part of the world. In time, he…
