My Summers in Macedonia
As a child I had the privilege to spend my summer breaks in Macedonia. Both of my parents were born and raised in Macedonia, and they came to live in the United States prior to my birth. Macedonia was originally part of Yugoslavia, which was separated during the war in 1990. The food is very different from American food. I also enjoyed listening to the music throughout the country.
Macedonia is such a wonderful country. I am amazed at the simplicity of the lifestyle that is lead there. I am amazed that in one section of the town I can be in the mountains, and within a minutes distance I can reach the center of the town. The center is filled with cafes and shops where everyone takes time out to sit and enjoy either a piece of Baklava or cup of Turkish coffee. There are three different languages spoken and taught in schools. The primary language is Macedonian; secondary Turkish and Albanian.
The food is amazing, simple, and very fresh. There is no fast food or pizza places, only family owned restaurants. My favorite food is called kebab, which is a lamb and beef mixture in the shape of a sausage. My family owned farms where they raised different animals used for eggs, milk and meat. There are also various fruits and vegetables grown on the farm which they consumed as well.
My favorite part of my summers was attending weddings and family functions. The music is similar to folk music. Listening to the guitars, drums and piano blare through the speakers would make everyone get up and dance. The form of dance was called Orro. This form of dance is very similar to Greek dancing. We would swing our hands while moving our feet counter clockwise in a circle.
Macedonia is a charming country filled with picturesque landscapes, wonderful cuisine and lively music. If given the opportunity I would advise everyone to visit.
