Before I was able to read for myself, my mother would read me stories before I went to bed every night.
My favorite book my mother would read to me was Where the Sidewalk Ends. I would always think to myself,” I cannot wait until I can read for myself, so I can read as many stories as I want without waiting for my mom to read for me”. As I got older I would always challenge myself to expand my reading capacity, so I could be the best reader out of all of my peers. Not only did reading stories help me excel in school, but it also taught me how to use my imagination and be who I am as a person. Reading books would let me escape from reality for however long the duration of the book was.. Books were contagious to me; I would read one after another until I physically could not hold my eyes open from restlessness. My favorite books as a child were adventure novels, such as Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. As I progressed as a reader throughout my childhood, I never lost sight of where it all
started. I was about six or seven years old when I learned how to read and write. When I learned how to spell my name, it just made me more anxious to do more with the power of writing. I wanted to be able to write stories of my own, so I could show my friends and family my own style of writing. It was my mission to be a skilled writer for the sake that I knew I could use my own imagination and create a work of my own. When writing became a sixth sense to me, I used it to my advantage. I was now able to create a story in my head and write it down on paper to share with people. My favorite part of school, was when the teacher would give us a topic and tell us to write about it. Game over, I would take that particular topic and run with it. No one could stop me now, I had prepared for this moment since I started. Now all I had to do was execute my creativity and share it with the world. That was my favorite part about the whole process, I could write whatever I wanted to and no one could stop me. Looking back at where it all started, I think to myself of how important these skills were for my development as a human being. Both reading and writing helped me be the person that I am today. It taught me how to be a free spirit and how to express myself to the world. I am now able to create my own masterpieces and later in life I will be able to reminisce on all of the goals that I set and accomplished. What I use these skills in the next chapter of my life for, I do not know, but I am certain that I now have the intelligence and creativity to accomplish the next big hurdle in my life.
