1 The text identifies six common myths about the poor (page 146). List these myths and the list data that refute them.
MYTH 1 “People are poor because they are lazy and refuse to work”.
The economy has made jobs disappear and poverty rates increase, however this does not account for the people that are lazy or refuse to work as is the case of a large number of people who don't have a job. In many occasions people are overqualified for a regular job, but they are not qualified to do another one. This means that they possess the knowledge and experience, and are rejected for being too experienced for the job. Some other people do not have a professional license and cannot do the respective job. In many other cases people don’t work because they are sick and don't have health insurance.
MYTH 2 “Must Poor people are minorities”. …show more content…
I have no idea what these myths are based on, however, I think there is a mistake to classify African Americans or Latinos as accounting for most poor.
This accounts for racial discrimination. African Americans and Latinos come from different races and cultures as well as different social and economic levels. Many of the African American ancestors came to the US as slaves. These people were part of indigenous tribes with little to no education and live in very different circumstances. As for Latinos, many have come here looking for a job. Some others have come for education for their kids and for peace and solitude. Finally, where I live is hard to find a homeless person that is Latino or
Black.
MYTH 3 “Most Poor people live in inner cities”.
The reason why people that are poor go to inner cities is because there are more possibilities of work and public transportation is better.
Myth 4 “Most of the poor are single mothers”.
Many of the income benefits provided by the government should focus more in the household and the family. In many cases these women raise more than one child and in the majority of cases they work more than one job to survive. More than a myth this is embarrassing the fact that we do not provide more support to single mothers.
Myth 5 “Most of the poor are older Americans”.
Like in the previous myth, poverty in the elderly population is due to the government. It is not right for an elderly person to have to worry about being poor. If this happens is because they don't have a pension or if their retirement is not large enough to survive. I think the government should help these people more.
Myth 6 “The poor get special advantages”.
When poor people pay for extra services like cashing a check, they do so by necessity, not convenience. Many of these people do not have a driver’s license; therefore, they may not have a bank account or a car to go places. This is why they need to use services that generate more expenses.
2. I definitively believe there should be another myth:
Myth: "Poor people have less or not education".
Education is more about wealth. The more education people have, the more tools they can use to combat poverty. Ignorance doesn’t discriminate against races or nationalities
