“He slides his blade across my taut muscle like a bow to a violin. Please don’t do this to me. He has broken the seal of my body. Blood flows from the slit and rushes; staining, screaming across the cool white sheet. My mother is making it up.” This is Julie Gregory’s first-hand account of a surgery that her mother forced her to have, to find a heart condition that didn’t exist. Julie was abused by her mother throughout her life through social deprivation, nutritional and medical neglect, emotional and physical abuse. All due to her mother’s Munchausen’s by Proxy, a form of mental disorder and child abuse characterized by repeated visits to the doctor because of symptoms that were either intentionally caused by her mother, or completely fabricated. The idea of intentionally causing harm to your child is unfathomable to most parents; parents spend most of their time trying to keep their children out of harm’s way in any way possible, not purposefully hurting them. However, Julie’s mother would intentionally keep her out of school to see specialists, force her to have unnecessary, painful procedures, and try every…

The first thing I am going to talk about is biomedical model. Biomedical model of illness and healing focuses on purely biological factors, and excludes psychological, environmental, and social influences. According to the biomedical model of health, illness is caused by external factors that invades the body, or by some internal change that are involuntary. Also according to the model good health is the freedom from pain, disease, or defect. It focuses on physical processes that affect health, such as the biochemistry, physiology and pathology of a condition. This is considered to be the dominant, modern way for health care professionals to diagnose and treat a condition in most western countries. Most health care professionals do not first ask for a psychological or social history of a patient; instead they analyze and loo for biophysical of genetic malfunctions. The focus is more on laboratory tests rather than the history of a patient or the feelings of a patient. Biomedical health is known more as ‘scientific’ model and this is simply because it focuses on other forms of non-allopathic medicine. This is a good model as you find out whether you are ill or healthy straight away instead of been sent for lots of test and been told lots of different things. Biomedical model is very straight forward and you get told your answer very clearly. Biomedical model has it weaknesses, a weakness of this model is that there is little regard paid to environmental or social factor that affects illness is caused it just looks at how it is dealt with. This model is similar to functionalist views as it serves purpose: the health care system is an institution which serves the purpose of making people better sio that they can go straight back to work and perform their function in society.…

In principle, psychopathology is the scientific study of mental disorders and their origin; in addition, this field of study examines the causes, development, and possible treatment for the disorders. Essentially, psychopathology encompasses three aspects that are considered as directly related to the mental disorders. These facets include the biological considerations, social issues, and psychological aspects of any mental condition. In fact, the initial perception of mental illness was associated with religious issues such as possession by demons and evil spirits. However, famous ancient physicians like Hippocrates and Plato would disrepute this perception gradually transforming the view of mental disorders and its causes (Gutting 2008). In this regard, the research into the causes of mental disorders would shift focus from the religious beliefs to a more scientific approach. In respect to modern day research on mental disorders, this essay attempts to investigate the perception and causes of psycho – pathology.…

Historically, people have sought to understand the world around them and how they as people exist within that world. Through the desire for understanding of ourselves and our bodies we as people seek to label and quantify bodily functions, behaviors, and illness. People first tried to explain illness in terms of a Biblical context – good verses evil. Therefore, illness was seen as a punishment for some overt or covert evil within the person. Slowly theological explanations gave way to value judgments on those in lower socioeconomic classes and a choice of unhealthy living (Weitz, 101-102). As scientific progress moved forward two models of illness became more apparent: the medical model and the sociological model. This gave way to understanding…

William Osler once said “Medicine is the science of uncertainty and the art of probability.” While this quote was said nearly one-hundred years ago, it still holds the same weight as is once did. In Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam, this quote is shown to not only be true in regards to medicine, but also for people as a whole; even so there are many factors that contribute to a person’s personality early on that can be traced to decisions and personality traits later in their lives. One of these factors is the amount of interaction and influence a person’s family has with them. In Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures, there are two extreme examples that can be examined: Ming and Fitzpatrick. In both cases, there are positive and negative effects of their varied familial influence.…
