The four pillars of the NHS are Leadership, Character, Service and Scholarship. These four values are not only the pillars of the NHS, but also the pillars that guide me through life. Through my experiences, I have embraced these pillars by demonstrating resilience, positivity, enthusiasm and determination. Last August, my father was hospitalized and eventually underwent surgery due to deteriorating health conditions. My Mom had to provide support for my Father and was no longer able to fulfill every responsibility. I took on a significant leadership role in supporting my Mother, nursing my Father back to health, and looking after my younger siblings. I have watched my Mother go through loss, death and failure and even then she has always maintained a positive attitude. She has been an exceptional role model for my character. When you’re going through a hard time, sometimes all you have is a smile and a good attitude, and it’s important to use it! I am not claiming to be flawless, however my persistent good character makes me a good model example to my peers and those around me. In terms of service, I have always been eager to serve my parents. Watching my siblings, helping out with dinner, or even keeping my younger brother on track in school are tasks I often find myself doing. As a kid, doing the chores and cleaning my room were not appealing to me at all, but as I have grown older I've learned to appreciate cleaning something up for my Mom or doing a favor for my Brother. I may lack formal volunteering experience, but helping my family on a regular basis is just as deeply fulfilling. The time and effort put into servicing my family reflects my dedication to making a positive impact on someone’s life.
