to social justice and improving the quality of life for African Americans. The NAACP is the nation's largest and strongest civil rights organization.
Today the organization has over 500,000 members, 1,700 branch chapters and 450 college and youth chapters. The history of the NAACP is one of blood sweat and tears. The real story of the nation's most significant civil rights organization lies in the hearts and minds of the people who would not stand still while the rights of some of America's darker citizens were denied. From bold investigations of mob brutality, protests of mass murders, segregation and discrimination, to testimony before congressional committees on the vicious tactics used to bar African Americans from the ballot box, it was the talent and tenacity of NAACP members that saved lives and changed many negative aspects of American society. The fundamental goal of the NAACP's education advocacy agenda is to provide all students access to quality education. The NAACP Education Department seeks to accomplish this goal through policy development, training, collaboration, negotiation, …show more content…
legislation,
Litigation, and agitation. The NAACP Education Department's resources are strategically focused on three major objectives:
Preventing Racial Discrimination in Educational Programs and Services; Advancing Educational Excellence; and, Promoting an Equal Opportunity Education Agenda. The fight for equity and quality extends to health care for African Americans. Long before it became a broad based public concern, efforts were underway to ensure that economic and social barriers would not lead to increasingly severe health crises in the minority community. In the early 1930's a national Health Committee was organized under the leadership of Dr. Montague Cobb. Today, the NAACP's Health Division has been leading the effort to inform and educate the community about health care costs; quality and access; disease prevention; health care professions and training; and youth and elderly health issues. The national health coordinator works with the National Health Committee to create and implement projects, evaluate and draft policy statements, and represent the NAACP at conferences and workshops, and on advisory boards. The Legal Department provides legal advice and representation to the Board of Directors and the President/CEO regarding the activities of the NAACP to ensure maximum protection of the organization's legal rights and to maintain its operations.
Its mission is to focus on class actions and other cases of broad significance and impact.
The department develops and maintains research, pleadings, briefs and other legal resources for the use of NAACP affiliates and a network of cooperating attorneys who assist with litigation and other matters. It sponsors a continuing legal education program for NAACP cooperating attorneys and other civil rights advocates each year in connection with the NAACP's annual convention. The NAACP is very active. They have a program called NAACP/NASA. The NAACP/NASA Saturday Scholars Academy is designed to create a thirst for more knowledge regarding the future impact these subjects could have on student participants' future career or business choices. The NAACP/NASA Saturday Scholars Academy is made possible by a grant from the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA). The purpose of the Academy is to offer opportunities for minority and disadvantaged students in grades 4 through 6 to increase their knowledge, appreciation and participation in the subjects of math, science and technology through enrichment activities. Using curricula, which explores earth science, life science and physical science the program, integrates the use of mathematics and computers also. As the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization, the NAACP has worked successfully with allies of all races who believe in and stand for the principles on which the organization was founded. Throughout its
history, some of America's greatest minds have worked to effect change.
