Nail Salon Observation
I have always been a tomboyish girl. I like playing video games, being outside, and all types of sporty activities more than I like to shop and get pampered. I’ve never had the urge to go get my nails done or get a pedicure so I decided to step out of my comfort zone and accompany my mom to the nail salon to get a pedicure.
I have never set foot inside of a nail salon before in my life. Unlike most kids I wasn’t dragged there to sit and watch my mom get her nails done when I was younger. The first thing that I noticed as soon as I opened the door was the smell. The chemicals that are used in that place are quite potent. So potent it made the smell of bleach seem like some fancy cologne. Then my eyes caught the array of nail polish that was covering two entire walls of the salon. I didn’t know that many different colors of nail polish existed. Then I noticed the difference in areas they had set up to differentiate what type of services they are having done. The girls that are getting their nails done and their eye brows done are all together, the girls that are just getting their nails done are together, and pedicure chairs lined the back wall.
We told the person at the front entrance that we are here to receive a pedicure and he told us to stand by the chairs and someone would be right with us. We were motioned to sit in the chairs and put our feet into this tub of blue water that had massaging jets in it. Seemed a little odd to me but as soon as my feet were submerged I felt an instant relaxing sensation. The chairs that we were sitting in also massage you, which was nice.
We sat there letting our feet soak while the employees helped other customers so I had time now to sit back, relax, and observe what was going on around me. I noticed that there were 8 guys working and only 1 girl working, which I would have thought the complete opposite but now that I’ve experienced it I would much rather a guy rub and pamper my feet as opposed to a girl. The guys were

As Nir has emphasized we should take a closer look at the working conditions that people have to deal with. Because of this many people have provided ways on how to maintain a healthy work environment. Such as using gloves and opening windows. While other salons have not supported their manicurist to have a healthier work environment, They have preferred manicurist to avoid the gloves and the act of caring for themselves. There only being today fifty-five salons that have taken action into maintaining a healthy work environment. Some of which have supported a 1938 bill that will provide them with FDA overseeing their cosmetics and giving the agency recall abilities. Which in fact Nir believes this till gives salons a way to regulate their own…

    Toxic Trio

Let's face it, when a woman arrives at a nail salon, the first thing she thinks about is the color of polish she is choosing or how excited she is to pamper herself. The last thing on her mind are the toxins that are in the actual nail polish. Little does she know, there are plenty of chemical compounds that are in each nail polish bottle, three of which are very toxic. They are formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl pthlate (DBP)-also known as the "toxic trio." These three toxins are in many famous nail polishes including the two leading brands, OPI and Essie. In 2006, a group of young women activists fought to eliminate the toxins, and they did. However, in 2012, the polishes were tested and to their surprise, the three toxins still existed. Why is this so? The Food and Drug Administration does not have any authority over companies to make them prove that products are safe before they are placed on shelves for consumers to buy, neither do they have control to demand a recall. With that said, this project was put together so that daily nail polish users can be more alert when buying or choosing a nail polish at a salon. The "toxic trio" is what makes every nail salon smell the way it does and it can cause many negative health effects.…

Whether we believe in God or not, our image of God is of a supernatural being that is all-knowing, has a certain amount of control over the way life works, and is perfect. The characteristics that accompany the word “evil” contradict the perfection that goes along with our image of God. As stated in many different religious texts, we all have internal evils or struggles and must face them or get through them in order to reach salvation and God. In many religious texts, it is also stated that our trials often times define our faith in God. Many writers portray character’s tribulations in order to overcome their inner evils. Flannery…

Upon opening my eyes as I wake up I stretch while taking a glance at the cursing clock that seems to hate me. I call my clock that because every day it seems as if it wants to wake me up at a later time each day. Than as my thoughts start to gather I realize that it’s the weekend, which means I can finally relax. I told myself that once the weekend comes I need to go get my nails done and finally relax and release all the stress and tension. In my mind a day of relaxation is a day at the salon where you walk in and seem to be all smiles, even with knowing that there is the most numbing smell and the extensive and prolonged filing that the nail artists seems to do.…
