The Name Sake movie took place in both India and America. The differences between India and America are blatantly prevalent throughout the entire film. There are differences shown in culture, behavior, scenery and more. Although there are many differences shown throughout the movie, there are some similarities as well. The differences shown in the movie begin appearing when the father is in a cramped train with a huge lack of personal space, where as in America we always tend to have a comfortable amount of personal space. The train and the closeness of the passengers would be uncomfortable to an American. The clothing shown being worn by the Indian people is different from American clothing because it is more traditional. Laundry is being hung to dry on balconies throughout the city, which is very uncommon in America because most Americans use washing machines and dryers to clean and dry their clothes. The next difference is that these Indian people refer to themselves as “Bengalis” instead of how we refer to them in America as “Indians.” Next the movie shows a young Bengali woman, whose parents are arranging her marriage. Arranged marriage is not performed in American culture. The woman is married off to the chosen man and sent to live in America with him, leaving her entire family behind in India. This is not something that would happen In America. Once the newlywed couple arrives in New York, the weather is cold but the woman’s clothing is thin and not thick enough to keep her warm in the freezing weather. When they are speaking the woman speaks in Bengali language to him, not a common language in America like Spanish or English. Once she becomes pregnant and is in the hospital, she is shown in a hospital gown that only goes down to about her knees. She asks the nurse if they have a longer dress.
