1. Sprawl- Kunstler Cast: List and describe three (3) of the "walking tours" of Detroit's BAD design features
• Detroit Rail station building is desolate with broken and smashed windows. The building has trees and plants growing up the outside walls of the building and around the building. There are no buildings placed around the rail station building for it to contrast with, and is standing alone. There is an office building placed on the top of the building.
• Michigan Avenue on one side of the street there are two and three story old commercial buildings, and on the other side everything is completely demolished and contains empty lots and nebulous box buildings.
• Again, on Michigan Avenue all of the buildings are made of plain brown brick, they wanted to make the streetscape old fashioned. Tiger’s stadium is not a nice building on the outside because it has no architectural features, and looks like a gray box.
• Beaubien Street Renaissance center looks like glass boxes placed on an enormous podium or platform, raised above the city. The building has a confusing layout which is tough to maneuver in and around it. It presents itself as a huge fortification from the street.
• Behind the Renaissance center you have a river front that connects to Lake Michigan. There is little to no activities around the building and is built poorly around a four lane wide street. It involves little interactions between the buildings and people and doesn’t have private and public places such as open cafes or shops. With this there is no expectation of people visiting this place.
