Located off the southeast coast of Massachusetts, Nantucket is a beautiful island that anyone would want to visit. Bartholomew Gosnold, an English explorer, discovered Nantucket during his voyage to New England. Thomas Mahew bought Nantucket but it was not settled until Thomas Macy led a group of Quakers to a settlement near Capaum. The island was first called Sherburne but changed to Nantucket due to the change in control from New York to Massachusetts.

In the whaling days, the island’s neighborhoods during the 1830s were intact, and the money to better or change them was gone as the disappearance of the population there was no demand for new houses when old ones could be had for the small or asking price. The last whaling ship leaves the island to never return in 1869. Aromatic flowers, cranberry bogs, beautiful beaches that never seem to end, church steeples, and three lighthouses decorate the island. A great spot for romantic and family vacations, Gray Lady, named because of the fog, is hidden away 30 miles out in the ocean and welcomes visitors around the world. The Town of Nantucket borders the yacht filled harbor and has cobblestone streets, art galleries, shopping stores, and historic captain whalers’ homes.
On the east side of the island, Sconset or Siasconset, a village community, features lovely rose covered cottages. Over on the west side has one of the best sunsets at Madaket Beach.
All in all, Nantucket is filled with rich history that you can only experience by visiting the island and taking a gander at some of the historic structures. Without Bartholomew Gosnold’s discovery, no one would have ever got to experience the beauty of Nantucket like we can today.
