After the long vigorous hours of hard practice, game day arrives. The coaches and girls have been waiting on tonight for numerous amounts of days. The smell of diesel fuel fills the air as the fierce competitors exit the yellow painted bus, after a long, time consuming ride. The players enter the gym in a parade like fashion as the loud roars of supporters fill the stands. While the hype increases, the players gear up for war. The torn knee pads slide on to protect the player’s boney knees as they compete to win. Laces of the black and white striped tennis shoes tie to perfection. With great pride, the joyful teammates rush out of the hairspray infused locker room with their number labeled jerseys ready for battle. Fidgeting around on the freshly buffed court, the girls anxiously await the sound of the referee’s obnoxious whistle. As the whistle blows, the Wildcats and Pirates fight viciously to win the first volleyball game of the season.
The first match of the game makes a nail biting experience for the fans. The roar of the crowd’s clapping and stomping fills the gym with joy and excitement. The Wildcats lead the pirates by a slim one point. The tall, muscular athlete on the front row spikes the ball over the seven foot net, hitting the floor with a loud “bang!” The crowd cheers loudly with the score increasing to twenty-four to twenty-two; Wildcats stay in the lead. Only one more point until the Wildcats win their first match. The long awaited point finally comes when the short, quick libero serves a mouth dropping ace in the back corner of the court. The noise in the gym consisted of “YEAH” from the Wildcats and “AWE” from the Pirates. The Wildcats did not want to get too excited yet; a long game comes ahead.
