Narrative Essay Weightlifting
Do you even lift, Bro? “Everybody wants to be a bodybuilder, but don’t nobody want to lift no heavy-ass weights,” spoken by Mr. Olympia, Ronnie Coleman. Through this quote Ronnie demonstrates how in life everyone wants the end result but they don’t want to put in the effort to achieve it. In my lifetime I have had many instances of trying to achieve a goal. Although a seemingly minor moment, the day I started working out, actually made me for the first time want to go through the hardships of actually accomplishing a goal. I became that person who lifted those heavy ass weights. As I opened the door to the gym I tried to hide from my gym buddy Ivan the anxiousness engulfing throughout my body. I knew he would not understand how I was feeling …show more content…
He replied “Of course,” in his egotistical way. I gave a slight chuckle as we prepared to begin lifting and got in position ready to spot him in case he could not lift the weight. He positioned his hands in the way he thought was appropriate and pushed up with all his might. The weights came crashing down but by the skin of his teeth he was able to push it back up. The look of horror on his face matched the feeling I was getting at that very second as I was mentally preparing myself for my turn to come. He attempted one more rep that was extremely sloppy causing him to throw in the towel after only two attempts. As I readied myself for the moment of truth I got into position and properly placed my hands evenly on the bar. In those brief moments before actually lifting I thought to myself What if I can’t do this? My thoughts were suddenly interrupted as Ivan egged me on to get started. I took a couple of deep breaths and pushed up as hard as I could. Gravity then took over and made 135 lbs. seem like two tons. I was barely able to do one rep before I put the weight back on the rack. I felt mentally crushed as if the weight had fallen directly on

Soccer is one of the most demanding physical high intensity field games played all over the world. The increasing demand to increase a player’s physical ability both at professional and amateur soccer has grown in recent years. The development of strength and power is paramount to success in most sports, especially those involving short-term, high-intensity efforts. Traditional Strength training programs improve the development of speed & power (Hakkinen and Hakkinen 1993; Rhea et al. 2003) and stability in an athlete leading to the possibility of better kicking performance, though it is important to recognize the role of strength in power Rostgaard et al. I clumsily loped my way over to him and grabbed his ankles. I turned and started dragging him to the tent, digging my feet into the ground. A lioness’s strength poured through me. Adrenaline surged through my blood, giving me the power I needed to carry a 180 pound man (with gear on). I reached the tent, a mere 20 or so feet away. I bent down and lifted him slowly onto a low table, about two feet off the ground. He grunted in pain.…

    Double Consciousness

This notion has stayed with me, though my understanding of the intricacies of responsibility is fluid. As my experiences shape me as a person, my own personal definition of responsibility constantly morphs and expands. Though it may seem unorthodox, my obsession with weightlifting and exposure to Andover’s high school gym culture over the past couple of years has helped me take responsibility and thus become an adult in different facets of my life. Deadlifting 405 pounds led to the realization that I had the power to make the gym an environment conducive to personal growth and not one that fostered constant judgement. The accomplishment also came at a time when I had just been elected as a community engagement leader. Experiencing double-consciousness in the gym helped me differentiate community service from community engagement. While community service requires those who are served to take on a double-consciousness and leads to stratification, community engagement promotes mutualism and is a two-way street. The concept of double-consciousness is key to understanding the underlying politics and power dynamics behind many issues including race, service and taking responsibility as an adult. Without my experiences in the gym, I would not be as equipped to tackle these issues head on. I am addicted to weightlifting: the adrenaline, euphoria and pain all make the experience magical. In a world where I feel that a lot…
