Narrowing Your Topic Worksheet
PART ONE -WHAT IS YOUR GENERAL IDEA FOR YOUR RESEARCH PAPER?
I want to focus on the life of Salieri and his controversial life that coincides with Mozart and his death.
PART TWO - FOCUS YOUR TOPIC
1 WHAT? Which aspects of this topic most interest you? Which aspects are you thinking of writing about? Mostly the way Salieri’s style of composing and playing compares with Mozart’s, and mainly the biography of Salieri’s life.
WHY? Why is your topic important? Why are you writing about it? How does your topic relate to existing scholarship? My topic is important because Salieri is a forgotten composer hidden behind …show more content…
the shadow of Mozart. I’m writing about it because I wish to learn more about Salieri myself. My topic relates to existing scholarship because I believe it would be a benefit to everyone to learn about Salieri.
WHO? Who are the people/groups/major players that are involved with your topic? Be specific. Salieri, Mozart, Mozart’s wife, and the King of Austria.
WHEN?
Is there a specific period of time or era you are interested in, pertaining to this topic? 1750-1825
WHERE? Where do these events occur or where is the issue relevant? (e.g. the United States, Pennsylvania, schools, etc.). Austria, overwhelmingly in Vienna, on the royal grounds.
PART THREE - Develop a research question
What specific question do you want to answer with your research? For example, if you want to write about J.S. Bach, you could write volumes about his life and works. Find one specific part that is interesting to you – perhaps his contribution to hymnody, or his work with newly emerging baroque forms for the organ, or his compositional legacy through his children, or why his life focused on sacred music, or a discussion of your favorite oratorio, or a comparison of the mezzo-soprano arias in his cantatas.
A paper dealing with any of these examples would include a brief introduction to the life and work of J.S. Bach, but the bulk of the paper and research sources would pertain to the main question.
What was the focus of Antonio Salieri’s career and why has he been forgotten from the mainstream of music history?
PART FOUR – Researching your topic.
1 What CLASS READINGS might relate to your topic? List page numbers that might be helpful:
151-188
Check your class text's bibliographies for potential sources and list them: none
Which library RESEARCH GUIDES will be useful for researching your topic? None.
Which library DATABASES will be useful for researching your topic? Encore, online database, Indianola public library database.
Sources – Brainstorm the types of sources you might find on your topic, whether they be available in archives, in published form, or on the Web (you must use at least 5 sources): online article, online biographies, books on Salieri, biographical information on Mozart & Salieri, Encyclopedias, and the Kamien Text
