Pearl in this novel is constantly being labeled as a “Product of Sin” and she is symbolized mainly as a physical, living reflection of Hester’s scarlet “A,” a consequence of her sinful deed. This symbol is carried throughout the book as Pearl gets older and as the letter “A’s” meaning becomes more developed and rich as the punishment, guilt, compassion and revenge acts of the characters in this story emerge from the shadows of their secrets.
Pearl is her mother’s shame and sorrow, she knows that the “A” puts her mother in a depressed state, yet she still insists that without the “A” Hester is not her mother. When Pearl refuses to even come near to her calling mother, because of the absence of the scarlet letter, we see the negative attitude
