During westward expansion many Native American Tribes were forced out of their homelands and moved into what was known as “Indian Territory” which is modern-day Oklahoma. The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Creeks, known as the “five civilized tribes” and the Plains Indians, which had been relocated to the western part of the territory on land leased from the Five Civilized Tribes, were moved into this area. Many of these tribes were enemies and were now being forced to live next to each other, which was not easy. Because of this, the tribes struggled for power amongst themselves. Cherokee nation was usually most powerful but now they were having to learn to live in a western way which didn’t carry on their traditional activities.…
1. Jamestown was the first colony that gets found. It was there where the first permanent settlement occurs. Jamestown was a poor location for colonization. The men dug wells to obtain water, but the water they found could not drink because it was contaminated. In addition, the ground was wet and had too many mosquitos. The mosquitoes were carriers of diseases and made the settlers sick. After a year, about half of the settlers had died of disease and starvation. The Native American Indians kept the English alive providing them with food. The English were so busy trying to discover gold that they didn't bother trying to grow food. That was when Captain John Smith became leader of the Jamestown colony. He saved the colony by creating a rule, which maintained that anyone who did not work would have no right to eat. This made the colonist planted food, and they were forced to build shelters and fences to protect against any attack. These American Indians or “Amerinds”, showed them great diversity of character and attainments due to the differences in climate, soil, food, building material, and the activities necessary to preserve life. They taught the settlers how to plant and grow corn, beans, squash, etc. and also helped them to establish good relations with neighboring Indian tribes. On the other hand what the English settlers offered to Native Americans Indians was different. In exchange for food, they offered them weapons, horses, cattle, sheep, vegetables and fruits, hatchets, swords, metal pots, skillets and knives, which would give them the technological advantage over their enemies. They brought not only tools for the conquest of the wilderness, but also the forms of government, the religion, the books, and the languages of the Old World. But besides the different technologies and different lifestyles that they offered to them, the English brought with them…
Anthropologists and historians believe that the first inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere were migrants from Asia, most of whom most probably came by land between 13,000 B.C. and 9000 B.C. across a hundred-mile-wide land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. About 3000 B.C., some Native American peoples developed better cultivation techniques and began to farm a variety of crops, most notably maize (corn), which resulted in agricultural surpluses that laid the economic foundation for populous and wealthy societies in Mexico, Peru, and the Mississippi River Valley.…
David Phillips Hansen’s new book, Native Americans, the Mainline Church, and the Quest for Interracial Justice (Chalice Press, $29.99), is a sobering and important exploration of the historical, theological, and social relationships between the church and native peoples.…
Native Americans had been all throughout the United States in early history, keeping to themselves living their lives. Americans believed the Indians to be savage and not worth the life they lived and some thought they should be exterminated, however, there were those who had compassion that believed that the Indians should be converted to Christianity and then everything would be fine (23). Native Americans showed as much willingness as white people to participate in the market economy (48). The Indians figured out different ways to communicate with the whites so that they would be able to trade and barter with them effectively (27).…
The five civilized tribes were the Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles. President Jackson wanted to move the Indians so the white men could expand.…
The Cherokee tribe splits up into three different tribes; Cherokee Nation, United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Cherokee was one of the first, if not the first non-European ethnic group to become US citizens. This is one of the largest groups with an estimated population of 25,000 members. It is the largest of all of the Southern tribes. The Cherokee Nation had approximately 135,000 of land in North America. Eventually it extended from the Ohio River in the north to what is the state of Alabama to the South today.…
The English settlers developed a selection of stereotypes against the Native Americans, ranking them as uncivilized and thus making it easier on themselves to lead the culture into their impossible situation, where the Natives have no choice but to either fight and lose or sit and do nothing, however if assimilation could have occurred through education or social structure the final outcome could have been mutually just for the two civilizations.…
Around the 1870s, the government handed out ration of food to Indians. Native Americans were not able to freely do anything during Western Expansion because they were only allowed to be in the reservations. They were not able to hunt or farm so the government distributed food to them. Native Americans were not able to hunt anymore because all of the buffalo were gone due to the settlers. Their reservations were poor land with no rich soil to farm. The Native Americans couldn’t supply no more food to their tribes so they had no choice but to accept the food rations from the government.…

In the 1830’s the trails of tears was an act of removal of Native Americans out of their home lands. White Americans who also occupied the same land as Indians resented Native Americans. Most whites saw them as aliens and uncivilized people. Therefore, President Washington tried to solve the “Indian problem’ by making them as much as the whites. They encourage them to convert to Christianity and learn to speak and read English. Five different tribes embraced their customs and became known as the “Five civilized tribes”. These included Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Creek and Cherokee.…
There were Five Civilized Tribes, the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole. The Five Civilized Tribes started to take on the culture of their white neighbors, in the early 1800s. The fact that those five tribes were beginning to learn the culture of the settlers confirms that the Native American people can be assimilated, which is the complete opposite of what Andrew Jackson quarreled. The Five Civilized Tribes were taking on the culture of the settlers but were accused of not being able to assimilate.…
II. The Great Plains Indians flourish during that time because tribes like the Sioux got horses and guns from the Europeans. This was an advantage that other Indians did not have. The Sioux became more powerful because while regular Indians were using bow and arrows the Sioux used guns which were far more deadly. Other Indian tribes were not as lucky as the Sioux. Many tribes died because of diseases from the Europeans. Also due to the high racial tensions at this time people did not like the Indians being on land that they could use. This resulted in many Indian massacres and whites forming groups to exterminate Indians…
The experiences of the Native Americans and the Africans in the North American colonies during the colonial period differed greatly, but were also similar in many ways. The natives were just that, natives; they owned land that was taken from them by European settlers who came from a land faraway. The settlers came to the natives' land, and were at a disadvantage because most of their people had died from diseases or hunger whilst crossing the ocean to find a New World. The natives saw how pathetic they were and approached them in offer of trades, which would lead to good relations between the two groups (After the Mayflower). Years after the natives' initial act of kindness, the settlers became greedy demanding their land, and threatening their villages if they didn't supply them with it. Because of the threat of destruction to their villages, the natives retaliated by attacking the settlers which ultimately led to the demise of the natives. "Africans, on the other hand, were struck by the shock of the new at the moment of their enslavement, well before they stepped on board ship or set foot on American soil" (Merrell article, page 538). Africans were enslaved, and taken from their homeland, from everything they knew. They were deemed not only different, but…
The native American Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has a legitimate concern. These particular grounds have been under their influence for hundreds of years. This tribe along with many other have the right to express their concern. It is not uncommon for Native American tribes to live off land immediately within their proximity. If the water was to be contaminated it would have dire consequences for this tribe and many others. It would probably be safe to assume many burial sites and locations of worship would be disturbed as well. Any self-respecting corporations would recognize this dilemma immediately and take the appropriate actions to mitigate collateral damage, public scrutiny and most the degradation of a prideful…
