NATO presence improves the lives of Afghan citizens.
“Victory is impossible in Afghanistan.” These are the words of former Soviet Union president Mikhail Borbachev who from personal experience knows that it is difficult to help Afghanistan maintain a stable government after his failed attempt to protect the socialist government SET UP THERE by former Soviet leaders.NATO’s main goal in Afghanistan is to assist the government in extending its authority across the country making way for effective governance and improve the lives of Afghani citizens. The former leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, has warned NATO that victory in Afghanistan is deemed "impossible" (BBC news)

Contention 1: NATO’s presence in Afghanistan harms citizens. In April of 2009 NATO led a 62,000 soldier military force fighting a Taliban- led insurgency and plans to send over more troops. According to Matt Waldman (head of policy in Kabul Afghanistan’s capital city,)”About 55% of civilian deaths in the insurgency last year were caused by foreign militants … This is causing anger, fear, and resentment among Afghans, and is steadily eroding support for the international presence.” NATO could not be improving the lives of Afghan citizens when they are killing more citizens then the Taliban is. Contention 2: NATO’s presence in Afghanistan does not improve the lives of Afghan citizens because it increases internal instability in the country. According to Matt Waldman, “There is a likelihood that the deployment of more troops will lead to more fighting” The arrival of more troops incites conflict creating only more instability in Afghanistan. The presence of foreign organizations and countries in Afghanistan never offers Afghanistan the opportunity to learn from its mistakes and stand on its own.” The imminent deployment of extra US troops to insurgency-torn Afghanistan will likely lead to increased fighting and more civilian casualties, aid agencies warned NATO officials” NATO’s presence in Afghanistan just leads to increased tension for the citizens. The citizens have to worry about their homes being bombed in an air raids, according to Matt …show more content…
“the strategic initiative of the government of Afghanistan and the (NATO) forces it’s partnered with is moving into (Taliban) areas…The offensive is NATO’s largest-ever in the country. But it involves only half the number of soldiers that fought in a U.S. offensive in the same region just nine months ago.”(MSNBC) NATO expects to defeat the Taliban with half as many soldiers as the United States possessed in a similar initiative to dismantle the Taliban. This proves to be highly IMPOSSIBLE. Many countries have already tried to help Afghanistan . Russia fought a 10 year war with Afghanistan trying to help them keep their new social government. This war proved too be too much for the Soviets to handle causing them to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. A. McChrystal the U.S’s top military commander in Afghanistan, suggests that an “increase in soldiers is necessary for NATO forces to avoid failure there.” If the NATO is in need of extra troops it is reasonable to say they are not getting the job done. Other agencies helping NATO are Save the children UK and Action aid they say, “More is needed to be done to ensure civilians caught up in the violence are not harmed.”(CNN) If the NATO needs help from other organizations one can most definitely ASSUME there goals will not be reached
