A country that doesn’t get involved in conflicts or wars, but always provided aid, assistance where and when needed. Even if Canada was not part of the conflict to lead to war, Canada always played an important role in discussions or mitigations of solutions to political conflicts in war situations. Canada has and is playing an important role in the Afghanistan war, conflicts between Israel and Palestine, and the Suez crisis. Canadas role in the Suez crisis was demonstrated by being a peacekeeper in assisting with ending the conflict. An example of such is by how a Canadian diplomat named Lester B Pearson had created the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) …show more content…
which were the first United Nations military force and had sent the first ever peacekeepers to Egypt to help in the Suez crisis (Bonikowsky, 2013). Although Canada was thinking of fighting in the Suez crisis Ottawa disagreed in joining the fight and how it could affect Canadas relationship with the UN and did not want to escalate the problem to anything bigger (Tattrie, 2006). Canada has helped in many ways during the Suez crisis and these are some facts to why they played a huge peacekeeping role at the time of the Suez crisis.
If Canada had especially not played a huge peacekeeping role in the Israel – Palestine conflict it is believed it would still been an on-going situation. Former Prime Minister Stephen Harper first words to the public about this conflict were “Israel has no greater friend than Canada.”(Woodly, 2016) Throughout the war Canada supported Israel’s right to peace and to protect its citizens which Canada then acted and voted against the annual resolutions on
Palestine in the UN General Assembly (Hessey, 2016). Canada had also sent peacekeeping force in the middle east of Israel in hope of stabilizing the region (Réghaï, 2008). Thanks to Canada the conflict has come to a peaceful resolution. It is unknown what the result would have been without our country providing its positive and peaceful negotiations for both parties.
Canada helped Afghanistan in a very special way and also was one of the hardest peacekeeping tasks to control for Canada. Canada had a major role in this problem by providing aid to its innocent and helpless citizens. As well with the soldiers of government who were trying to keep the peace. Canada provided aid by sea in the Gulf of Persia to prevent any
Al-Qaeda member from escaping and also took part in the USA – led multinational campaign to capture Al-Qaeda members (Azzi, 2009).
In 2007, 330 Canadians from Foreign affairs, Canadian International Development Agency, and the RCMP were sent to Afghanistan to help in the reconstruction of Afghanistan homes, there economy and medical aid to the wounded
(Geddes, 2007). In 2012 Prime Minister Steven harper at the NATO summit in Chicago announced many Canadian soldiers would stay in Afghanistan to help train and mentor the
Afghan national army for any other complications that may occur (Rilley 2016). If it wasn’t for Canada I dint know how Afghanistan would have been helped and till today people from Afghanistan appreciate what we did for them.
The Suez crisis, The Israel – Palestine conflict, and the Afghanistan war are only some of the conflicts and wars Canada had joined in a positive matter and its outcome has shown us how our country’s involvement provided positive changes within these unwanted political conflicts. If Canada had decided not to join as a peacekeeper what would some of the outcomes been? Would our international relationships have been affected and how? How would it have affected our citizens oversees and at home?
