Some of the characteristics of the Puritan Society are that they are quiet people and practice self-discipline. They were very theological, superstitious and conservative. The Salem community is strongly repressive and strict. Everyone in the society is ranked on the amount of land they own, and all members of the community are aware of everyone else’s business

In any society, conformity is a main element to belong within that society. In the Salem community, there are many aspects of conforming which are shown. For example, when the men and woman are accused by the girls as to be witches, it was seen as conforming to admit to ‘interaction with the devil’ as it was seen as okay to lie than to be seen as a liar for not admitting it. A quote I heard once in the movie Shutter Island sums it up perfectly: ‘Is it better to live as a monster or die as a good man?’

After the girls start accusing people of witchery, I think the only people who feel a sense of belonging are the Putnam family. Rebecca Nurse will not conform to admitting association with the devil and therefore is outcast. The Proctors don’t go to church as often as is expected and do what they think is right rather than what they’re told to, and thus are also looked down upon. Rev. Paris does not have a secure sense of belonging as he becomes paranoid and thinks that everyone has turned against him.
